We have a small yard (9stables) which me and the current lady keep very very tidy and clean you would not realize it was a yard!!, we have just had three new people move in so now there is 6 horses,

Me, my mum and the other lady have always kept the yard immaculate but, the new people moved in and have made the room where we keep out stuff stink (of horses) literally smells discusting!!, and the hay cubard we keep our rugs in there is also

, now what would you do? just leave it and get used to it or actually say something

no, your not.. i can understand, if you make a conscious effort to keep your horsey area tidy, why put up with others untidyness, I think I would a tactful word!!

well it depends. You don't actually say that they've left it a mess, just that it smells. What of? horse? mould?
If it's a mess that stinks of mould/wet rugs then yes you could say something
If it's tidy, but just smells of horses, then not a lot you can do
Different people have different standards - I was on a yard with a woman who was mad about the muck heap, it had to be perfect steps, of equal height, and perfectly level. Sometimes there has to be a bit of compromise

Its reasonable to expect people to clean up after themselves and their horses - poo pick the school, sweep the yard after picking out feet, fork their muck up etc - but complaining that the tack (?) room smells of horses?!

Assuming that they are generally neat and tidy and this 'smell' is the only thing they've 'done' then I don't think you have grounds to complain to anyone.

Don't tell me your horse rugs etc never end up filthy and stinky or do you wash them all once a week?!

So sorry! but who said my yard isnt tidy and well kept? its just in the nature of it being a yard with horses on it smells of horses, doesnt mean we dont clear up after ourselves.

A pig farm would smell of pigs, a cow farm of cows, so why shouldnt a yard of horses smell like horses?

hmm - stink? it could be really smelly rugs that are heaving - and that shouldn't be the case.

but probably best to firstly have a word with the YO and then a polite word with the new liveries - on the basis that a: they wont know what they are doing to upset you unless you discuss it with them and b: it could come at a worst time and sound really bad!

No its mouldy rugs
blush.gif
, wet smell of bedding

, leaving things lying around, i suppose, i will just have to wait and see what will happen when they settle in, i am really ocd with the whole place, yard owner has babys!! so is never down at the yard, however i ride one of her horses so i speak to her reguarly,

Off course it isnt the horsey smell but its the bad musty smell
blush.gif
, not looked after kinda thing, and leaving things lying around!! and my outdoor rugs are put up at night on a rug rack to dry overnight, they dont smell, however they are cleaned every two months,

i suppose we will just have to put up with it then
tongue.gif
hahah

If it's mouldy old rugs that need cleaning then I would suggest that they put them round in the barn or somewhere like that to await collection for cleaning, there's no way I would have that kind of thing in my tack room!! you are right, ask them to clean up after themselves and that you have always kept the yard tidy, don't drop your standards! make them keep up with yours

Perhaps just have a friendly welcome chat and 'induction' with them on how the yard is run lol! Other yards I have been to have never had any real routine or set rules, just a 'do as you please basis'. My present yard is a 'more well to do place' and there are set rules and routines about how the yard is kept/ran. Alot of new liveries don't know the ropes and so we help them along the way! Try to be tactful and come across as a friend otherwise you may end up with bad feeling all round xx

im quite an untidy person. We have our own areas at the yard outside our stables, there are also a few communial tackrooms. I make sure i brush up and keep things generally tidy. I have a very dirty, smelly horse, who make a mess of his stable and also makes short work of rollin gin the muddiest paerts of the field!
We dont have rug racks and i have had to find places to hang his rugs to dry. Some people on the yard are very OCD in nature, and others are worse than me!

If its a communial tackroom then i suppose peopel have there own rules in place about keeping it tidy. However my space outside my stable is my area, and as the Y O says it is rented otu to me with the stable and its my personal area that people should not be loitering in. lot of people have the time to make the yard area look amazing and there area clean and tidy. Im not one of those people. I have a 3 month old baby , a 15 month old baby and a 6 year old with cerebral palsy who i care for full time. My horse gets the rest of my spare time, and when i go to the yard i spend it looking after him. I dont have loads of free time to make things liek spotless. Other peopel ont he yard have jobs, and family as well, and some peopel are just more busier than others. I think for me the fact that the horses are looked after is far mor eimpoirtant than keeping a feedroom immaculate. Some horses do smell stroner than other as well. I think its also good to get along at a yard. I think in tthis case i woudl weight up the risk of offending and falling otu with other liveries, with keeping the peace. Its all about the joys of a livery yard. If the YO dosnt set rules for everyone, then i suppose its a case of everyone fidnign there own ways.

IF you are the YO's spokesperson, then i'd say something. if not, i wouldn't.
personally, i can't stand stinky stables or stinky tackroom - mould, urine, manure, any of it. i use drops of various essential oils in water, as a cheap disinfectant/anti-bacterial etc. works brilliantly.
i'm pretty tidy, everything in its place etc, but that's because i hate looking for things, and because i've seen the horrible things that happen to horses on untidy yards when things get left around for them to attempt suicide with... i used to be a livery on the untidiest yard on the planet and a LOT of horses got badly injured (or worse), big lesson.

I sweep outside my stable everyday and always leave it tidy but by the time I return it looks like I never bothered. Sadly some people do not have the same standards and once they've done their bit they make no effort elsewhere.
Have a chat, maybe thru the YO and ask them to clear up after themsleves howver be careful as there is nothing worse than half the yard not speaking to the other.
Hope it works out
