My very ex farrier from 20 years ago has just chewed my head off for trimming my own horses' feet, mine went barefoot 8 years ago and I started trimming myself about a year ago, my horses are sounder and have healthier feet than ever before, he has never even laid eyes on them, apparently people like me make his blood boil! Shame the twit didn't stop to get my reply, I could have maybe explained that I have lost all faith in farriers and explained why, and no I haven't gone on a course, I have been quietly studying all the data a person can glean in this day and age for the last 8 years and will continue to study and improve and understand for the rest of my life, It is so nice to be able to care for the whole of your horse, not have to wait for 3 days for a farrier to get to see my horse who need a shoe fixing or a nail bind etcc.... I have sorted out a quarter crack that my warmblood has had for 10 years with and with out shoes with weekly adjustments to that foot the crack has gone, I mean it has really gone, Hurrah! Being a farrier is a Dark Art, I would never want to be one, I just want to trim my own horses, not any body elses and I certainly never wanted him any where near them I have seen with my own eyes the beating with a rasp a horse who moves gets, he is well known for it!

Any way I am looking forward to getting my barefoot Taliban certificate in the post, or maybe a t-shirt and baseball cap, just to let everyone know my feelings on hooves!

Chilli and a nice merlot for those that got this far!

RANT OVER !!!

Yep give me your e mail address and pay pal password and certificate will be in post. lol seriously your title made me laugh but good going for you :) x

I want a certificate tooooo! Can you photocopy yours and send an extra to me, mine seems to have been lost in the post? Although maybe I don't deserve one because I don't actually do the trimming myself.

Do you reckon the barefoot crew could come up with a more suitable nickname? I know this will get shot down for 'PC' but I really don't think appropriating a name of a fundamentalist group who have ripped a country apart and caused suffering to thousands is really suitable.

Glad it's working for you :)

Taliban is actually the word for student!

Taliban does indeed directly translate as student in Pashto when you've taken it into a pronunciation we can deal with.

However, as none of you are Pashto speakers and it's widely used in all languages to mean the fundamentalist political group (The Oxford English dictionary defines it as such and if you used Taleban that would be more believable) I imagine this is now just a handy explanation for what is reasonably inappropriate.

Or I could start the Shod IRA. Reckon that would go down well :)

FWIW this wasn't a chosen label but one bestowed on anyone barefoot by "haters". The Barefoot Crew weren't keen and raised the same points as you Lolo. However it continued to be used so the barefoot crew appeared to embrace it in good spirits.

I didn't know that it also meant student; that's very fitting.

Only it's not ;) Because all words have roots- like, we could say that rape is an ok word to use when you mean to say you took something... In it's original, it means 'to seize'. Only now, that's not what it means in our language and therefore it's not ok.

If someone feels the need to belittle an opponent by comparing their enthusiasm for a subject to a group of people who truly believe in some terrifying stuff and who have ripped a country apart for those beliefs, then you can be fairly sure they lost the argument.

As usual the posters on the forum, side step the original issue and focus on something totally irrelevant, Taliban schmaliban! I was more intrigued that a farrier appeared to be cacking his pants that a mere woman was doing her own horses feet, funnily enough my womans eyes can see balance, concavity, and study enough to deal with cracks and flares unlike the many farriers and barefoot trimmers, my mare no longer dishes, every six weeks to trim or shoe means 4 weeks of too long hooves and horse unbalanced, a light manicure every two weeks and heho massive foot improvements!

Ditto Lolo, hate the term as no matter the meaning its associated with hatred, violence & extremists.

Discussed in detail before. I like the fact that it's meaning is about study and students.

We tidy ours up between farrier visits. Our farrier is absolutely fine with it and comments about what a good job we've done.

It's no wonder you ditched your farrier if that reaction is typical ;)
