I am a competent, experienced rider - not brilliant but ok - have a fairly good seat and rarely fall off (thats tempting fate I know!!) I have a lovely WB mare who is a fantastic ride. Although, at times, she is spooky and can put in the odd buck, we have a nice relationship, having learned to trust each other more and more over the 3 years I've had her.
I hack out with no problems at all and compete with relatively few nerves....
BUT i have a real fear of schooling at home:confused::confused: It has always been the same with every horse I've owned. I have had regular lessons with a great RI for 3 years, and am fairly ok with him on the ground shouting orders. I also compete at home in the very same school and have no nerves whatsoever??? Its only on a day to day basis that the nerves kick in - I force myself to go in the school because, believe it or not, i REALLY enjoy schooling - even though it seems i dont???!!! But i usually only manage 5/10 mins before giving up, thankfull that i have survived without something dreadfull happening.
I'm wondering if i should try some sort of hypnosis treatment - have any of you lot tried it? Does it work? Or can you maybe suggest any other method please?
I have tried:
Breathing exerciese
Listening to an Ipod
Just walking - with no pressure to do anything else
Rescue remedy
ect ect....

I tried the confident rider hypnosis CD for hacking out as I was really nervous. It really helped me actually more than I thought it would. Still a rubbish rider but do feel less nervous in schooling and hacking. So it worked for me. I believe there are other CDs in the series for jumping and schooling, worth a shot as not very expensive either. Hope that helps!!!

Well, hypnosis won't do any harm , but is it not worth identifying why schooling at home is so awful? I'm sure you have (and I really don't hink you're being pathetic) , but is it being on your own eg, if something goes wrong no-one could pick up the pieces? But then you hack out quite happily (I assume you go out on your own). If schooling is something you love then why not just do some of it out hacking? As you have regular lessons it's not like your horse is missing out. You could also stick to lungeing/long reining/loose jumping for now so she gets some form of schooling at home and you this would be less stress for you. If you can manage 10 minutes schooling then great ! Make it 12 minutes next time-set a timer if you need to. Or just aim to trot a decent 20m circle and then go for a hack. And if schooling at home makes you that tense it's probably not the best for your horse either. It sounds like you have a very nice horse that you have a lot of fun with so if you never school at home again-who gives a monkeys?!

I had cognitive therapy from a chap who was on the list of chartered hypnotists or whatever its called. He was £30 for a one hour 50 min consultation. It really helped me as you have to replay a positive 'video' in your head substituting it for a negative video, i.e when you jump all you can think of was the last time you fell off, so picture yourself riding round a big course of show jumps clear instead. It was really effective (until the next time I fell off of course!).

Try TFT ( search on line) you can do it yourself (free) or you can get help from a practitioner.

It is very effective.

Good luck

I got prof hypnotised to help with a exam (not to do with horses) and it really helped me. I think you have to believe that it will help you though. All in all it was a lovely thing to do, was very very relaxing, thoughley (sp) enjoyable and I would reccomend it too anyone. It really helped with my nerves for my exam too.
