And would like suggestions as to what you would do in my situation - becasue like countless others I am in it and would like to know how you would handle it...or what you think I or others should do.....

My career is important to me. The main reason I work is to afford my horse...who is a huge part of my life.

I HAVE to work in order to AFFORD MY HORSE.

Unfortunately I have to work long hours. I was in the office at 7.30 this morning and I will be here until past that tonight. At the moment, I am working an hour and a half on the M25 away from home.

I therefore, like countless others, pay for my horse to be on livery in the week. I am in the unusual position in the way that I keep him on a pure DIY yard and pay someone to do him - but this means I have to trust the girl that does him to do him. I have NO CHOICE in the matter. I cannot turn up and start doing stuff and checking on him...

I had a nightmare experience on part livery, and cannot afford for him to be on full livery with exercise.

I miss my horse terribly and hate not being able to ride in the week (its better in the summer)

So what do those who suggest that I have a resposibility to make sure my horse is looked at daily by me suggest I do? Go to a riding school?

I had the horse before the job...do you suggest I leave my job? Or perhaps sell the horse?

And am I a bad owner because I pay to keep him 'ticking over' in the week with lunging and a hack on a Thursday, then compete and have lessons at the weekend
And am I a snob because I have a lorry?

I would LOVE to work a normal houred job, as I am sure others in my situation would. But it is not possible for me at the moment, and I probably would not be satisfied.

I think your opinions are completely narrow minded and fairly ignorant.
I also think you should evaluate that people are not always able to have the best of both worlds.

Wake up - NOT EVERYONE is in the same situation as YOU.

And even if I was I would still pay for someone to do his bed - becasue I hate mucking out. Does that mean I am lazy or just want to eliminate the part of my hobby I hate the most?

Gah! So so ignorant!

Blimey, where did that come from??
The trouble is you have probably fallen squarely into the trap of those who make thoughtless comments, what does it matter what other people think, just go with what is important to you and your horse.
Many of us out here work ruddy hard to keep our neds and spend the wee small very dark hours wearing ourselves for our furry friends so you are not alone!

Maybe if you didn't play on HHO all day you wouldn't need to work such long hours

Totally agree with you though, there do seem to be some odd views about livery... I wouldn't let it bother you. I think a lot of it boils down to a lack of understanding and a hint of jealousy probably.

I'd love for someone to muck out for me!

HHO Fills the gaps. for instance now I am in the office waiting for 2 calls from the US but havent really got anything else to do apart from that....

i can't really comment - we don't work particularily long hours, BUT we can't afford a lorry and competition entry fees, so we can't really compete (apart from local PC stuff) and we're on DIY livery.

i'd love to be able to afford to pay for someone to muck out Osk, and fill my haynets! i HATEHATEHATE haynets, and he has two massive ones every night
mad.gif
(fatty) but such is horse owning on a budget! besides, i like bringing him in and turning him out, making feeds ect... (and i'm OCD about his bed, has to be perfect!) i like spending time with him, not just riding/getting on and winning (and I would never win anyways

)...

I guess this is in some part due to some of my comments in FFMs post.

Once again;

I have no problem with full livery - In fact for my horse, where I am, it is fantastic.

I don't see that there is a requirement for you to muck out or your own horse, that is not bonding with your horse at all

I don't see that there is a requirement to visit every day (I have never said so)

And ultimately it is your choice.

But for me, I want to see my horse a few times a week. I feel that is my responsibility.

I don't understand why some people are confusing not visiting your horse for months with having an axe to grind with full livery.

Unfortunately a lot of people put all of their balls in one bag- because the lady down the road has a horse ond only sees it at the weekends, everybody who does this must be as equally unhorsey, uninvolved and does so out of choice. I think its sad you are in this situation, I feel for you that you don't get to see your horse all week, sometimes I think I have it hard when I end up having to go out at 9pm at night to check haynets I know my sister won't have done, but I often overlook the fact that I am very lucky having my horses but 10footsteps away.
I am in my position because I am still at home, with my mummy's support. I think you are making the best of what seems a sad situation and i hope one day it won't be so pants for you.

ive just put my mare on part livery due to a change in work circumstances. all i do now is turf her out in the morning mon to fri and i do her on weekends. if i didnt put her on part livery id have to sell her as i currently dont have time to see to her in the week.when i employ more people and reduce my work hours i will take over all the duties again.until then its a case of needs must . end of
grin.gif

Wish I could afford full livery but can't hence why my mare is being sold.. Uni work is piling up and I cannot justify the time to spend with her, if I could afford full livery I would take it like a shot but can't so in her best interests I have to sell her

Can someone link me the previous post, I can't find it. Thanks.

I also work long hours 12 shifts and that means I cannot look after my horse for those 4 days. I am more lucky that I do roughly 4 days on and 4 days off, so he gets to see me, which he hates as he is ridden for 4 days!!

I also pay a lovely lady to look after my horse and she is superb. I would love to be able to look after my horse everyday as it is personal choice of how I like things to be done.

On the mucking out thing, I do kind of enjoy it in a twisted way, but I have no problems paying someone else to do it, when I can;t.

On the bonding thing, the only way to bond is to spend time grooming, riding, fussing e.t.c. You cannot bond by mucking out, filling haynets and filling water as said horse is in the field having a life of rielly!!!

I know how you feel as I am kind of in the same boat. Don't take things to heart, people will always have differing opinions.

On the lorry front, I do have a lorry albeit, old and scruffy, but I am happy with my lot and that's all that counts.

Uh oh, looks like you've had a tongue lashing from a few members!! It's really sad when someone posts a fairly innocent post, thinking that people may sympathise or empathise with you, but it turns into a slanging match and an abusive post

Here's my opinion;

We do what we can to do the best for our horses, not all of us are lucky enough to do our own horses 24/7, not all of us are lucky enough to have family/friends look after our horses for us when we are not around either , so we make provisions and to me, that's what you have done. I really don't think you should worry about certain members comments, you need to ignore the bitchy snipey comments and choose which ones you think are aimed at you with rational thought.

I'm sorry you keep getting laid into. xx

hell i dont care if you see your horse one a year, you do whats right for you & your horse & bugger everyone else
grin.gif

sadly there are no solutions, if you come on a forum you will get peoples opinions good or bad and there are both on here.

I am not sure why you care so much about what people here think or dont think? stuff them, as long as you can sleep at night, thats all you should worry about.

Sometimes I am away competing and dont even see my horses for a few days! (except one I am with!), OH does them, to a different standard ultimately but they are happy!

Lets face it, the crux of the matter is the horse doesnt give a [****] who feeds it, mucks it out etc, all it wants is to go out in the field with its mates reguarly, and have feed, hay forage etc and a dry rug.

Horses do not think like us, they dont view the world like us so dont get so hung up on it!!

I dont see why you feel the need to justify yourself , as long as your horse is happy and healthy and you enjoy yourself when you see him/her then thats your buisness , everyones working situation is different and you have to do whatever works best for yourself and horse , if it wasnt for my ex husband taking my daughters to the yard whilst Im at work, enabling me to pay for livery ect we would struggle to find time to look after him , chill out and dont worry what people say
smile.gif

Everybody has different ideas about what we should be doing with our horses. All that really matters is that the horse is cared for on a daily basis by someone, be it owner, livery yard owner or someone else. The horse doesn't care who mucks it out, feeds it, fills its haynet, grooms it. But I feel in order to get a bond with your horse you do have to spend some time with it and get to know it. A bond is easier to build with some horses in a short time than others.

My horses are both on full livery because I couldn't find a DIY yard with decent facilities where I live. I miss having total control over what is done with them, but equally I love the time it has freed up for my family. I'd due to give birth any day now, and it's been great not having to worry about the horses routine being disrupted. I haven't seen so much of them recently as I've got huge, but they still know who I am and still want a cuddle from me when I do go up.

So long as you are happy with your arrangements and your horses are cared for, then b*ll*cks to what other people think.

Sensible advice from Marsden. I especially agree with:

'Lets face it, the crux of the matter is the horse doesnt give a [****] who feeds it, mucks it out etc, all it wants is to go out in the field with its mates reguarly, and have feed, hay forage etc and a dry rug.'

FF if we all got irritated by things that other people say on here, then we would have a forum FULL of ranting posts like this. I honestly don't know why you get yourself so worked up about other people's opinions?

You see, if I was a groom who was having to work Christmas Day only because I was paid a lousy wage all year round and might have the chance to earn an extra 30 quid on Christmas Day for looking after some horses, and I read some of the patronising posts which have been posted on here over the past couple of days then I might be a bit irritated that these people who are inferring that they are the only ones who have families and might want to spend this day with them.....but of course everyone knows that grooms don't have a life and they enjoy shovelling sh1t for peanuts.
grin.gif

SEE!! It could be worse couldn't it...you could be a groom!
grin.gif
grin.gif

And I thank my lucky stars that I have never been a groom!

Eh, so long as your horse is happy and healthy (which for me includes behaving well and doing the job you want) then it's all good. There are always going to be people who justify their own decisions by denigrating other people's but honestly, I think if people really have faith in their own plans and aren't jealous or dissatisfied in some way, then they rarely have time to care what anyone else is doing.

Don't worry about it. You know you're doing your best. Other people are doing there's. I don't really see what the fuss is about. . .

Be fair, a lot of people did say they couldn't care less who looks after the horse or how often the owner visited, as long the horses WERE looked after and cared for by SOMEONE.

So long as you are happy with whatever option you have chosen regarding horse care, what does it matter?

I don't have a high powered job, me and my husband have a small feed merchants on Dartmoor, we have good and bad turnover weeks! But, one of us manages to leave work every day in daylight, to check the horses and poultry, and to give the dogs a run. That means that the last one to leave the shop goes straight home, where if you're lucky, dinner will be in the oven and the fire lit! We don't earn loads, but we don't work overly hard either! We aren't rich, our horses live out and are scruffs, but the most important thing? The whole situation works for us (most of the time!)
