I am so angry - advice please

I would have thought there would have been something of the kind too! People who I come across in the yard have been informed about it - a certain livery seems to have her knickers in a bit of a twist at me saying how she has been touching my horse and then touching her own which I understand but I wasn't aware that the horse who she has had contact even had ringworm at the time. So I'm hoping and praying her horse doesn't get it as she is the sort to be sending the bill my way even though none of this is my fault :(

Anyone got any advice on what to do if that situation occurs?

I'd probably pop a notice on the board up saying that 'X horse has ringworm and is currently being treated by the vet.'

You have notified people and if they kick off, what were they doing touching your horse anyway?!
Notify your insurance company if it happens, they will laugh and pass it staight back.

If the land doesnt belong to the farmer and was rented on a casual basis it probably doesnt form part of his official 'holding'

Moving sheep and cows off your holding is not allowed without some paperwork

Not exactly connected but something to drop in to conversation with the YO if things get sticky perhaps?

That's a very good point. Also not allowed on her land full stop unless she has a holding number I believe?

What is the point in treating the ringworm, only to then turn the horses back out into the field, where they will re-infect themselves from the fence or cattle? Complete waste of time IMO. Stable one, treat it, move it to another yard. Then do the same with the other.

I thought that once a horse had it, it had fairly good immunity. Would only re-infect with a different type of ringworm?

I never actually thought of doing that as our board isn't used much but I will definitely be putting a notice up tonight when I go out there. If people don't see/read it then it's not my problem... I tried to inform them :D at least it covers my own back a little bit then.

Said livery was ok touching my horse on this occasion as he was bought into the yard for a mess about and I was there so that was fine. But I have a funny feeling that she likes to prowl up to my field when I am not there to have a look at my horses. There has been occasions where she has said things about my horses which she wouldn't know if she hadn't been on the prowl up there - like "oh I see that Brandy has a new rug on". Wouldn't even be quite so bad if my paddock was situation right on the main yard where all the other horses are but mine are kept up around the corner. No need to go up that way unless going to my field or into the piggery where unauthorised people aren't allowed to enter anyway. Funnily enough, she never actually says anything to me though, always to a close friend of mine who is a livery on the yard.

+1

At this point OP you're looking for damage limitation (at least the YO is). Don't let anyone hand your horse - likewise any other horse that has ringworm.

It's important to disinfect everything - and the YO should be looking at creosoting your fences too.

I know this but unfortunately it's not as easy as that in my situation. I have a 24 yo Welsh Cob and a 22 month old Clydesdale x who will not be stabled for the life of me. My miniature shetland will stable fine. Makes a lot of noise but will stay put unlike the others. Any other recommendations? Other than stabling?

I have put up an electric fencing barrier to stop my horses from going near the cattle whilst in the field.

You had a verbal agrrement with the yard owner about the stable and the field.
The yard owner also has a duty of care for you and your horse.
My advice would be to find another yard if you are not happy there and once moved then reclaim the cost of the veterinary treatment from the yard owner.
If you wish to stay at the yard I would make a list of all the veterinary costs in treating the ringworm and politely but firmly ask the yard owner to pay for it as she was responsible for inviting the infected cattle in to the field.

Um, OP - know you won't want to divulge exactly where you are but allow me to ask a question, i.e. is your yard East of Exeter????

Coz I'm beginning to think I know where it might be............ I might just PM you with a name and see if my suspicions are correct.

No it's not, my yard isn't actually in Exeter. More in the Cullompton direction :)

How big is the field minus the 2 paddocks? Can you use your stable at all?
What are you paying monthly to the YO for how many horses?

If I'm honest I am rubbish with that sort of stuff and totally forgot how big YO said the field was. But it is PLENTY big enough. Well after the mix up I told YO that I no longer want to pay for the stable and just pay for grazing only. When I payed for stable I payed £180 to YO. Next month will be £160 minus stable.

So, you paid £80 each per horse per month? Is that correct? Now, though, the YO has knocked £10 per horse per month off for just grass livery/no stable? or is all this for one horse? If so, you really should have kept your stable .....

I am not far outside Exeter, and can sympathise with how difficult it is to find decent yards or grazing.
I would love to be of practical help BTW,but although I have my own grazing it has been badly affected by all the wet and simply won't support any additional horses, sorry:(

As jhoward said though there are places around, but do need to know where to look and be willing to do a bit of ringing around or door knocking.

Is it Cully side of Exeter you need,or did you just end up there because there was nowhere else??

On your current situation I'm not sure what you can do TBH.I would be hopping mad same as you,but your options are probably limited as your YO just seems to be seeing £ signs and has little consideration for the rights of the people paying for the service.

Being me I would be saying something, but I appreciate many others prefer not to make waves,I think if you don't at least make it clear that you are not happy now though it will just get worse and YO will walk all over you in the future.

Another argument for the ringworm thing is the human factor,AFAIK it can also be passed on to people?? What would happen then if people had to be off sick etc?? No one would be paying him livery then!! YO does need reminding of his responsibilities to his liveries and their animals IMO,perhaps a few others would be willing to express their concerns about having infected cattle on the land??

I would not be giving up that stable BTW for the sake of the difference in money. There are times when you might need to stable,in the case of illness or injury, what would you do then?? As someone who doesn't have a stable at all BTW I am aware that most things can be managed in the field or with some creative thinking, but as i have found recently with a tricky abscess there are times when you just have to have facilities in order to manage.I have made do with a cattle pen I have access to,but if I had the opportunity of a stable for emergencies as you do I would be taking it i have to say.

I hope you can find some middle ground and that it get's better at your current yard, but I think it would be wise to start looking around at other options.Sounds like the travelling is a nightmare for you anyway??

Put a thread up on here saying where and what you are looking for, never know who might see it and know of something.Good luck:)

Thats £90 per month per horse. Going down to £80 per month per horse. Agree should have kept stable. Approx £5 per week

Works out to the same price but I pay £40 pm for my mini shettie, one lot of £15 pw for grazing only and inc stable was another lot of £19 pw but will now be £15 pw for grazing only. I have to admit I do regret giving up my stable, more because of the fact that it feels like I have backed down and they've all got what they want! My stable for other livery and YO got away with double renting the stable

No, I only ended up in cully because I had 4 weeks notice to leave my old field which was in sowton village and couldn't find anywhere else, I only knew of this yard as my friend was already there with her miniatures.

I am definitely going to do some more complaining because it already feels like this has all been forgotten in the yard. Apperantly I can rent a stable per week if I ever needed one for an emergency but TBH I want my old stable back for good!

I will try another thread on here soon but have asked a few people in my area on here and will look around local tack shops etc. I have also put threads on here a few times before and it's never really led to anything :(

Thank you for your comment though - appreciate it :D

I would not be happy about that either, especially as they admitted your horse would have got it from the cows.

How do you treat ring worm? I have no idea!

Once I know I will tell you what I would do!

A 1/10 solution of bleach/water will get rid of ringworm. (Ask your vet fist though! ;) )
