Ok, so horse advertised yesterday, I arrange to view last night for 11am this morning. I text the dealer to let them know that we are 5 minutes away for the dealer to ring stating that they had someone else phone this morning and that they have just arrived and would I mind parking up and waiting to see if they want him or not. I politely but with a stern voice stated that I had just driven 2 hours to view this horse so he said come to yard to wait. Anyways, we went to yard & waited for an hour for the people to then buy him. Poor horse was advertised as a weight carrying horse but the novice lady that bought him was not suited whatsoever and you could clearly see the horse struggling to carry her. This is not sour grapes but my personal opinion.

So I have wasted one of my OH's very few precious days off & paid someone to do my yard to have a timewasting dealer - am so annoyed right now that am going to give horse hunting a miss until after xmas. :-( I always hear about timewastings buyers but it also applies to sellers!!

That happened to me once - travelled 2 hours to be told when got there that I was a back up incase the people buying the pony backed out. They were also there. Annoyed was not the word :(

I wish you better luck in your horse search - I also will be hunting after Xmas & I'm not looking forward to it!!

How annoying & thing is I would have had him vetted & picked up by tomorrow pm with the cash in their hands, the people that bought him didn't even have the deposit on them. I wish I could name and shame the dealer as this is not the way to conduct business. Although my fantastic OH took me to pizza hut for lunch and bought me some new clothes in Leciester to try & cheer me up. :)

& It wasn't just the fuel, it was the fact I had to pay for my horses and my liveries horses to be done.

Am thinking I will avoid dealers now & keep trying private homes after xmas :)

I have had a similar happen more than once with private sellers, I have told them i am on my way, drive there, and someone else (an earlier appointment) has bought the horse and I have wasted the trip.

It is annoying, the least they could do is let you know that they have someone else coming, and then you make the decision if you want to take the chance.

In contrast I much prefer dealers to private owners. Yes they can muck you about but I've had less hassle with my dealer than when I bought privately. When buying my first I'd arrange a time & date only to be told that the horse had thrown a shoe/couldn't be ridden - would've been fine had it not been 200 miles away!

The thing is I have no respect for the dealer now, said horse was very short backed and could probably only have a 17/17.5" saddle max and the lady the horse was sold to was at least 20 stone being a size 20+, fine but she will need a 18.5" saddle which will press on the horse back/kidneys. She was also a complete novice just managing to trot for which the horses face expressions were not at all amusing. I can see poor horse being returned to dealer with a bad back and/or bucking problems or poor horse being deemed as a problem horse. He was not designed for the larger rider so why have the dealers sold him to them when I am a size 10/12 and weigh no more than 11 stone??!! I know it sounds like sour grapes but they just seemed so desperate to sell horsey that anyone would do whatever the detriment to poor neddie :-(

And therein is the answer. As long as they get their money they don't care. Fortunately not all dealers are like that, we've bought from two dealers over the years and were delighted both times.

I'd have flipped my lid after that yesterday, that cost you an awful lot of time and money.

Name and shame!!

When I was selling my horse (private) I let everyone know there were other appointments, but also wouldn't have done a deal without seeing everyone as I wanted to pick the best home and riders for my boy (he went to a lovely home and I get updates!)

Its the difference between wanting a sale at all costs v someone who cares about the horse!!
