some of you may remember back in november my lad walloped his head on a fence post(had xrays etc...had sinusitus, but fortunately everything ok,still has ridge between eyes bless him
frown.gif
)....however whilst under heavy sedation,in NOVEMBER,we decided to rasp teeth(is a bugger, hates the gag...i thought,i now know different
frown.gif
)WELL...sorry for shouting but am sooo mad....teeth done 3 months ago...he was virtually unconscious due to xrays...he had on the gag,she had no excuse.....dentist came today, and because of what vet said about his front tooth being at an odd angle and causing his offside jaw to work unlevel, had dentist to looksie
smile.gif
THANK GOD i did
mad.gif
....neddy was upset at 1st with gag but settled, without sedation,he looked and felt etc, asked me if i had any resistance on any rein, said yes i did on the left, low and behold how sharp were the teeth
mad.gif

all in all,was listenening etc and couldnt believe how the rasp was getting wedged against sharp edges,am sooo pissed off,i have had the vet because he needs sedating, yet this lovely guy has come, been quiet and patient and got a job done that the twat of a vet couldnt get done whilst he was unconscious near as damn it!!I could cry!!sorry guys just peeved with myself,he is such a good boy he has always tried to work through this and it must have been uncomfortable!
cant fault the vet for work other than teeth...1 huge lesson learnt, not tarring them all with the same brush but, dentist for me every time!!
(vet also blamed a very slightly misaligned front tooth for the rest of the tooth probs that side...hmmm,dentist said such a minor problem will not cause any probs, after what he has done for my boy today could kiss his butt, lol)!!
sorry long, dont feel ya have to answer, just am so mad...he cost me £35 and the job was fantastic...vet charges 35 call out, sedation, then 30 for a job they are hopeless at
frown.gif

glass of rose and choccies if ya still here

EDT over vet any day for me too, Vet was on a visit for routine vacs and suggested he look at 2 horses teeth, thinking i would save a bit of money, agreed, Never again he (vet) upset both of them being heavy handed with rasp, told him to leave them alone in the end. My EDT is so passionate about his job and I just love the way he handles the horses you dont even have to hold them, and they end up falling asleep because they so chilled, but then i suppose you wouldn't ask your doctor to give you a filling

you are right, have had my boy all his life and he got more and more stressed every tooth visit
frown.gif
,i know why but to long to write down,to save him the stress i get him sedated and done by the vet
crazy.gif
big mistake after watching the guy today...had's accepted him putting gag on,closed
smile.gif
..once opened and he put hand in mouth...he wasnt happy,he made a boaking noise, lol, threw himself all over...wasnt happy he closed gag...the way he dealt with how my horse didnt like it was amazing!!!
dentist for me every time!!!

We need to raise people's awareness of how serious even a small mis-alignment can affect a horse's chewing and cause production of sharp edges, not to mention shredded cheeks, ulcers and the intense discomfort of having a bridle, bit and rider all adding to the awfulness which their mouths can become.

And how VITALLY IMPORTANT it is to find someone properly qualified to treat our horses and their dental needs with far more than a cavalier rub round with a rasp and a see you in twelve months.

Get the right EDT and the whole thing becomes a fascinating and enlightening procedure which opens up sooo many cans of worms. Did the EDT mention any possible muscular areas which might be uncomfortable due to holding himself off the pain caused by his sore mouth?

The real minefield is who, amongst all these so called EDT's is properly qualified? Do you know how to tell which of them is the real deal? Which have actually taken time and gone to great lengths and expense to furnish themselves with the knowledge and experience actually required? Any EDT worth his salt will feel it necessary to obtain these difficult to come by exams before they feel able to correctly carry out this very important maintenance.

Who is this very lovely and gentle guy? Hope he's as lovely and gentle and qualified as mine

I think you can tell a good EDT just by the " way " they have with the horses apart from the qualifications, mine is happy to talk you all the way through the treatment as well as telling you what his little dremell? tool does, held the drill on my hand, just a vibrating sensation, so if it touches cheeks it doesn't hurt but on contact with teeth files them, always invited to put hand in horses mouth to feel any sharp edges, then again after treatment, so i can recomend my EDT if you are in SW, Hes not bad looking either

I can see ya point and i agree with you, however i will admit i had my doubts about dentists...ya need a good one
smile.gif
i have to admit i was very impressed with what i saw today, and my boy settled very quickly
smile.gif

I thought i was doing best by my lad, getting him sedated as he hates the gag so much, and i actually believed the vet would be able to rasp his teeth level whilst he was nearly unconcious
confused.gif
how wrong!!!
(i opted to have him sedated every yr to save him stressing)
i now have seen him with the guy that did his teeth and the vet is sacked...with an obnoctious phonecall tommorrow, they so are not getting away with charging me for that!!!

I have to agree with the amount of EDT's out there, trying to find a good one is a nightmare, we tried one women many years ago and one of mine ended up in the vets with a split tooth and abscess a couple of days after she had been. I am very lucky my vets work in partnership with a EDT who is absolutely fantastic and he is brilliant with the horses never pushy always patient and he always gets you to feel the problem and shows you were the problems are I have been using him for nearly 10 years now and would never change. Our local horse magazine is full of EDT's I have seen most of them at work over the years, some are okay and some are not.

Sadly the only EDT I trust and will use (in the past I've used about 4 useless ones that did sweet fa) won't travel out to me for 3 sets of teeth and my YO doesn't like other people (vets/farriers/dentists etc) out to the yard so I can get any more for him to do but thankfully my Vet specialises in teeth and is incredibly quiet (and is always armed with plenty of sedation!), I'd trust him him with teeth any day of the week.

My vet called in a EDT when my boy had a cracked molar. I was very impressed with him.

He trains other dentists and does up to 6 courses himself a year, as he puts it, he has to keep ahead because of students.

He also gives a chart of the teeth and what he has done to them.
He charges £60 per horse (roughly a set of shoes) and I wouldn't use anyone else.

He is a member of British association of EDT.

The EDT's I've tried round my way have not been good, and on one occation I had to ask them to leave, so I now always have my vet and have never had a problem

Well said JMO7, i think too many people use vets for teeth. Best of it is my EDT costs £30, far less than the Vet would charge, he has been doing it for years and does a great job.
Farriers for Hooves, Back Specialists for Backs, EDT's For Teeth and Vets for the rest!

i use a lovely chap called antony jones from the south west and he did luna last week for us a routine pony was having some problems as well he found a 4inch pice of wood lodged in the roof of her mouth..we have used him for over three years now and he does nearly 30 horses in the day he comes not one of needs the vet to knock them out now he takes his time and gives the all the time they need to be done all the owners are so pleased that he does ther horses now and the general feeling now is edt any day!!! i wont use a vet now like you say its £36 call out £35 rasp and then most of the time the vets want to knock them out our tooth man is £40

i've had exactly the same experience. my very good and trusted vet did teeth for me, exactly 2 weeks later i happened to have the 2 horses on a yard where an EDT was, had a chat with him, he had a look for me... put gag on, let me have a feel. They were SO sharp i could hardly believe it. i will never let a vet do teeth again. i think some of them think it is beneath them and so don't bother doing it properly!
i don't go to my GP to have my teeth checked, put it that way...

My EDT is a human dentist as well
laugh.gif
She has been a horse owner since a little girl, trained to become a human dentist practiced that for some time then decided to train to be an EDT as well. She does both part time
laugh.gif
Only used her once (only had pony for a month) and she was brill she put both myself and pony at ease (my first time with EDT also!) My girls teeth were a right mess and she sorted them all out was with us ages kept taking 'thingy' off pony's head/mouth to give her a break. Certainly booking her next time. Was advised by horsey owner friends not to use vet basically because of cost.

My Vet is also a fully qualified EDT. So I have the best of both worlds. he is very patient with the horses, Pickle has never been sedated, sisters horse has but he is a biter normally and can be a pain at the best of times.

I agree that not every vet should be doing teeth, but for me our vet has the same qualifications as an EDT, and is cheaper than calling out an EDT as its a big yard we have a weekly routine visit charge

Id always get the dentist out for mine if they needed any tooth work, its just like with hooves - Id always get the farrier out for those too! Vets arent specialised enough IMO to deal with things like that (from experience).
