I got back on Jolly again today. I felt a bit better than the previous couple of times, but when he got even a tiny bit cheeky I completely lost my nerve! Poor sod is prob getting bored cos after work it's dark so all I can do is school (plus am too nervous to hack now anyway!). I put a teeny tiny cross bar up though and trotted over it a couple of times on each reign, and have patted myself on the back a bit for that and hopefully it mixed it up a little for him. He also went out for an hour hack with one of the riding scholl girls on as they were a horse short (and apparently only had 1 of his spooks) so I bet that was good for him. Tomorrow I'm thinking of putting a little course of cross poles up that we can trot over....

I feel such a failure. I have no patience....

My dad is having a hypnosis CD being sent over 'schooling with confidence' to try and help me regain a little bit of myself. I hope it works as I'm just not enjoying riding just now. It's so tiring and emotionally draining. Crossing fingers that it will be worth it in the end. More ground work required me thinks I will lunge in the week.

Phew..

Do you enjoy just being with your horse? If you don't, then read no further, but if you do...

... stay off him. Work on the ground. There are loads of books that have fun and interesting things to do in hand with your horse. Teach him to stop when you drop the leadrope/reins. Teach him to stand tied to nothing. Play games with him. Put out poles and 'stuff' and have some fun in the school. Spend time grooming him and getting him to move in response to your movements.

Have a hug and a hot choccy

oh hun most of us have been there at some point! It will get better small steps like you are doing is the best way, just keep stretching yourself a little bit at a time

Thanks Mrs M. I have been doing some ground work and will continue to and will look up some of the techniques you mention.

Thing is I WANT to ride, it's my favourited thing!!! I figure if I keep forcing myself into it my confiedence will slowly come back IF he's good.......

Boo, I'm a big wuss and a shadow of my former riding self!

She forgot to mention that I was there and no matter what she was feeling she rode fine and looked good, he had his ears forward and was interested in what he was doing, slowly slowly to catch a monkey is what I say, I have been insitigating to vary things to keep him interested, hopefully now that hayledge is off the menu, his back and teeth are now sorted, I am pretty sure things will only need time and patience to get there.

Thanks for lunch chick X

Of course my daddy was there spurring me on! Contemplating taking you to tattooist to get 'angel' inscribed on you!

Did you mention patience? LOL, we are talking about me here!!

Let you know at dinner tomorrow how I get on unless you wanna come over and help Mags hoick jumps around! he he.

Enjoy Darley.

xx

could you not ride a more bombproof horse whilst still riding your own horse? this may not help you but it worked for my friend who got really confident on an old riding school pony who never put a foot wrong, and was able to carry that confidence over to her own horse. and ditto do lots of work with him on the ground, building more trust.

your not a big girls blouse, i think most people have lost there confidence at some point i used to teach and quite often a previously very confident rider could lose it all because of an accident etc i know i have done once for quite a while after a scare from schooling an ex racehorse it reared fell over on me.. . I think you are right to stick with ground work for a bit, but also maybe get some private lessons on him? anyway keep your chin up try stay positive, you can do it it just takes time and maybe a wee bit of help xx

Hi Vick - Yes, had bad experince 3 weeks ago now. Had plenty since I was 7 years old but when I made 16 years old I stopped bouncing and have had some cracking 'incidents' since then. Seems to knock my confidence more each time and I paid for 'the pefect pony', which he was for 6 weeks. Little deflated just now.x

Ditto mrs m, take yiur time with him, there is no pressure to ride, you have the rest of his life with him, i think you will find your confidence will boom with him if you do some work on the ground with him. I have just bought a baby and turned him away for the winter, but am doing a lot of ground work with him and am getting to know him and him me too and my confidence is really coming along with him, so much so that i can't wait to bring him back into work in the spring.
Good luck
Kate x

You actually sound very brave to me, fear is a horrible emotion to feel, yet you still got on.
You say you felt a bit better today so things are clearly improving.
I can't add anything to MrsMozart's excellent advice but my confidence isn't what it used to be either; if I was as nervous as you I'd have probably given up by now so you're a braver person than me.

Try this: ride for five mins, then get off. Keep this up until you find yourself staying on for longer without even realising it

Ah you're all so kind, thank-you! I'm lucky an have lots of support from my nearst an dearest.

Iced yumyum - My last mare reared up and fell over with me on the tarmac next to main road - I feel your pain!

This one is new pony (gave up riding for couple years to try and not break myself any further, but can't stay away!!) and fly bucked me round field till fell off....out of character....Had fixes put in place but he prob also testing me a bit now he's got away with it once, but I am not really up for being tested now!

Mrs.M - BTW can I just say I love your BMI tracker, awesome!

Aww bless. I understand that we don't bounce like we used to. My latest experience of horses has also given me a good shakin! But i can't let go. Im thinking its the right kind of horse/pony thats important! (or just lots of caution)Especially if there's brittle bones in the equasion!)

Sorry about my spelling im thick!

don't worry i know how you feel and you are doing way more than me!! other day i was too scared to even walk round the school once (we have an indoor school so i have no excuse). I love my horse and love riding but it really gets to you.

I got the hacking with confidence CD which i think is the same series and they are excellent.

Keep at it your doing great

I'm surprised you don't have much confidence actually as Beans is hardly a plod, and you did quite a bit a with her while you owned her didn't you!?!! Don't really have much to say other than stick with it and good luck

You'll get there it'll just take time.
