I don't get why Sprengers horse bits are so expensive and yet these Sprenger collars are so cheap.
I guess prong collars are a training tool for certain boistrous, aggressive dogs or dogs which weigh more than the handler. Shouldn't be used by Joe Blogg I don't think.
Prong collars aren't nearly as bad as they look and can be quite effective when used and fitted properly. We used to call them power steering when I taught obedience classes. They were generally used for large, rowdy dogs, mostly adolescent male labs. A tweak of the prong collar got their attention and was much less likely to hurt their esophagus or neck than a traditional choke collar. I have used one on a very pushy dachsie. The prong was much less likely to damage the discs in her neck than the choke as very little force was required. Before I used it on the dog I did put it on my arm and try it out. It pinched a little but didn't jab into my arm or anything.
Not illegal in britian-should be though along with those electric shock collars!

Don't be so quick to judge! Have you ever used them yourself or seen them being used??
I've not used a prong collar but do use the electric collar on 2 of our dogs. I think ultimately using the collar has saved both their lives!!
It was a turning point for my GSD X, if i hadn't got one he would probably have caused and accident or even possibly have got killed being run over. He used to run off all the time, used to cross main roads etc.. and I used to live next to a motorway so I was very worried about that... and yes I did spend a lot of trime trying to use conventional training methods.
He very rarely gets a shock just wears the collar and if he gets too carried away he gets a warning beep and responds to that immediately!! He is not stressed it doesn't hurt him on the correct level, it just catches his attention away from whatever he shouldn't be doing!!
We also had a problem with our Rottie she is great natured but is a sheep worrier... she has killed 5 of our sheep!!! Fortunately none of our neighbours have sheep otherwise she'd probably have been shot by them!!... it was a choice of try the collar or have her PTS... she now has a collar and is a happy but more obedient dog!!
Used in the correct manner these collars are an extremenly effective training aid when all else fails!! But they could be very cruel in the wrong hands!
I also saw the dog whisperer program on TV the other day and he used these very effectively to train dogs to keep away from snakes un the US.
im sorry but I dont buy this. there are 10 million and one ways to prevent/cure (whatever you want to call it) unwanted behaviours without resorting to giving your dog an electric shock- would you give a child an electric shock every time it was naughty? No- why? ....because you would be arrested as its inhumane, so why is it ok to do it to an animal.. would you want an electric shock every time you didnt do as you were told. I understand behaviour which can be dangerous but seeking advice from experts is better than doing this. Look at dog borstal... do they need these collars? no!!

I think that is a damn good idea actually; I think it might teach some of the little sods some decent manners!
As to dangerous situation - personally I'd use anything in an effort to preserve the life of my dogs....if one of these collars saved their lives, then so beit yes I'd use one. My dogs are extremely precious to me and I never want to see any fatality come their way. I want them to live to a ripe old age, thanks.
Has anyone actually put one of these on their wrist and tried it?
Or are you all just assuming because they are known as shock collars that they are a shock like you would get off an electric fence?
It is less than the sort of shock you would get from touching a TV when they get static on the screen....
I know not all people agree with them but we all have to decide for ourselves what is the best thing for our animals... I think certainly with the Rottie it was the right thing to do, rehoming her would have been extremely irresponsible so should we have had her PTS???
We have given her another chance...... a moment of slight discomfort to her is nothing compared to the pain and distress caused to the 5 sheep she has killed over the last 2 years!!
As I said she is now a lot better behaved and we don't have to worry about what she might do!!
I have tried the electric shock collar...and to be honest its not bad at all even on the highest level.
I don't agree with the relation between dog/child...a dog is an animal capable of being highly dangerous when out of control, I think this is one of the problems to be honest...people comparing animals to children/humans, this is IMO...where behavioural problems stem from, animals can not becomapred to people ....I think when people think of these implaments...they possibly think of their own animals...not dogs that are dangerous and out of control...I have nothing against either electric collar/prong collar in the correct hands.
Some of these behavioural programmes...show u very small snippets of the dogs behaviour and training in a controlled environment.....I don't think u could compare that to all dogs and all scenarios....and I do recall some of the dogs from that programme being destroyed.
Also from what I have seen on dog borstal...its mostly down to owner idiocy....so really the trainers are teaching the owners as in most scenarios....its very hard to work against a dogs natural instinct...esp that of chasing/killing.
Maybe its the owners that need the electric collars
Yes I've put on a zap collar and zapped myself - it felt like a sharp tingle....and absolutely nothing like as strong as an electric fence zap. I certainly wouldn't put my neck on an electric fence.
Actually, one of the trainers on Dog Borstal did use an electric collar on a Bull dog that was deaf, so that it's owner could get it's attention. Didn't hurt the dog in the least.
I was watching Cesar Millan last night and he used a prong collar on a JRT. Worked like a charm and the little dog finally managed to get some perspective in it's life.....which pleased it's doting owners immensely.
Whilst I am not a "fan" of the electric shock collar or the pinch collar, I wouldnt rule them out in certain circumstances. As the rottie owner said, no amount of training will help some dogs (and horses!).
If these worked on ponies I would not have had to have my escapee pony put down! - dont even patronise me by saying why didnt you try....this that and the other, we did EVERYTHING bar putting hobbles on the thing!
If you have animals that roam, and have a predisposition to roam, then roam they do, not even barbara woodhouse would be able to assist.
Its far better to use these methods than have a healthy animal destroyed.
if you actually knew what you were on about, you'd realise that the shock collars emit warning sound first, they dont just shock the dog randomly! - most dogs have learnt by 3rd shock (which is tiddly but enough to get their attention) that warning sound is the one to take notice of, so they dont actually get shocked anymore! Its set to boundaries so its not a case of oh "bang" didnt see that coming, the dog knows the set boundaries and if it forgets, simply gets a warning beep, end of.
I really do get sick of people judging others that dont understand the full implications of some animal behaviour and the fact that some animals WONT AND DONT CARE!
In your world any animal out of the "mould" would obviously be put down then rather than saved through maybe an unconventional but effective method??

I would smack my naughty child - Quick report me to the police. I beleive that you need to use what is neccessary, the GSD & Rottie owner did what she needed to do, and it has worked. each to their own.
