I ballsed up rugging today

I don't like over rugging and my mare doesn't feel the cold much but I buggered up today.
Turned her out in her m/w half neck. Went off and did some chores then came back to the yard to drop off some feed.
Thought I'd just check on her before I left. Armpit felt warm and though her ears were cold her poll was tepid. It was only as I turned to leave that I noticed that she was shivering a little. I think the problem was the wet exposed neck.
She's now snuggled up in her stable warming up and munching on hay.
Note to self: if its cold enough for the m/w rug AND ITS WET go for the h/w full neck.

It can catch you out because although it's not really cold (where I am) the combination of the wind and rain constantly will make them feel colder. My old pony would normally only have a rainsheet on during the day but the combination of wind and rain means iv left his 100g full neck on today.
We all get caught out sometimes

Yep, ive got it wrong once this week too. One of my horses isn't clipped and had a medium t/o on and I was surprised to find him a little cold and slightly tucked up looking. He kept his under rug on after that!
The temperature like you say isn't too low but the rain and wind is relentless.

Its funny how different horses are. It was a bit frosty this morning when i arrived at the yard and i was going to swap my boy into his HW turnout but when i went to take his MW off he was toasty warm in it.
He's out 24/7 and is fully clipped but is a pretty warm pony anyway

I clipped my mare out yesterday and she is mw full neck. Completely warm and toasty. The older native pony only has a bib clip and big chunky coat is also in full neck mw but was cold... you have to take each day and each horse as they come!

Yet my high chaser clipped cob was in a thin fleece last night, and a no fill today. No complaints whatsoever!

It's funny how different they are.
