Despite only have a learner license and not having a towing vehicle, I bought a Rice! :D

My YO is selling his two trailers to buy his step daughter a lorry so decided to take the plunge. Hattie likes it too as I loaded her onto it to see how she liked it and she didn't want to get off of it. She got mardy when I unloaded her in the car park and tried to turn round to go back up the ramp to load herself into it again, lol.

I'm fed up with having to beg lifts and one of my side saddle friends is horseless and side saddleless at the mo so I bought the trailer, have the side saddles and the horse, so she's going to tow us in her Landy and we can both show Hattie in different classes.

When I get some stuff paid off, I'm going to start my driving lessons again as I've already had over 100 over the past few years and then save up for a little 4x4 to use for shows/horse stuff only (can't afford to drive something like that around for daily use with fuel costs) and take my towing test. I need to see if Petplan will add it onto my insurance and need to get a wheel lock for it. I want a decal for the sides of it of a side saddle rider as well.

It needs a new paint but my OH and my friend won't let me paint it pink as it won't match her Land Rover, lol.

I've wanted a horse and trailer since I was 10, it's only taken me 27 years!!

Congratulations!

Your post has really made me smile - love the picture, too. I agree with your friend and OH re the pink, sorry.

Wishing you and your friend a lovely summer of touring around :)

I would like to know what the unladen and MAM weights are for that trailer as it might be possible and legal with one horse to tow on a B licence without having to do B+E

See many cases of legally towing on a B licence in the HHO TOWING CLINIC link below

Hi ROG, don't know all that as I know nothing about cars and stuff. We have a 2litre diesel Picasso and my mare is about 450kgs. It looks to be a heavier and sturdier trailer than my YO's Ifor 505 Hunter though.
Where would I find out all this weight, etc info? I tried to look for numbers on my trailer but all I could find was "Rice" and Cosby where it was made.

If you can find a serial number on it somewhere then that will help them get you the info

If you know what it is called - such as a rice yellow horse trailer (made that up!!) then I might find the info on the internet

ASSUMING ITS THIS MODEL FOR YOUR CAR - there are so many!!
Kerb 1300
GVW 1850
Towing 1300

TRAILERS - they would need to be downplated by the manufacturers to 1300 max as 1300 trailer must not be more than 1300 kerb for B licence towing
Downplating is usually free or at a minute cost

BATESON LIGHT HORSE TRAILER plated at 1300 leaves 625 for load

CHEVAL LIGHT HORSE TRAILER plated at 1300 leaves 645 for load

IFOR LIGHT HORSE TRAILER plated at 1300 leaves 530 for load

Those are three examples I know of but there may be more

It just says Rice of Leicestershire on the trailer (it's an oldie as I don't think they are in Leicester anymore). I know some of them are called Rosette but mine is just plain old Rice. I had a look on the website but none are like mine. I'll have a good poke around it when I go to the yard now to see if I can find a number.

That link shows exactly our car (lol, although we paid more than that a few years back!! :P)

So if I understand correctly, if my trailer was downplated at 1300 (I don't know what that means but I will take your word for it), then my mare would be able to be able to be towed by our Piccy as she is 450kgs? Or does the weight also include my horse, tack, and all the occupants in the car as well (me, my husband, 11 year old, my friend and my dog)?

At the last horse show we went to, we caw the same car as ours towing an Ifor 505 with two horses in it. I wonder of they were over the weight?

Call RICE 01904-470282 or 01904-470315 and they will be as helpful as they can in regads to the weights for the trailer and will probably give you a local dealer for any downplating

The max weight of the car is the cars GVW - that inludes the weight of the empty car and everything in it
The max weight of the trailer is the trailers MAM - that includes the empty weight of the trailer and everything in it

The HB505 is 905 empty so that only leaves a max weight of 395 which can be loaded into it - bet that was over the 1300 towing capacity with one horse !!

I bought my first trailer last week too! It feels good knowing that you don't need to scrounge a lift off everyone doesn't it :p I haven't passed my trailer test either, but my mum can legally tow and doesn't mind :)

OI!!
give mum a break and you drive with her as supervising driver

you already have a B+E provisional

Goodness gracious, I feel so thick as I don't understand all these weights, etc. I will give Rice a call tomorrow and see what they say. I looked everywhere I could but didn't see and model numbers, only Rice Cosby stamped on everything. I took some photos so maybe I can email them as well.

Tbh, I doubt whether our car could tow it as it is a sturdy box and has a wooden floor. Maybe if we didn't bring the dog and I put an alloy floor in though! :D

LOL, I STILL have to enrol for some driving lessons again as I've not even done my theory test yet and my learner license expires next year!!

Thanks for that link ROG, that trailer looks a bit smaller and narrower than mine though. Mine is than same internal width, maybe an inch wider, as an IW505 as I measured them both (the 505 is the YO's other trailer).

I rang Rice but they said the serial number would be on a little plate in the lower right hand front corner but mine doesn't have any so I may have to shimmy underneath the trailer with a torch and see if I can see a chassis number.

Feathered, it looks similar to an Eventer doesn't it? This one is very wide though.

It's lovely! We used to have a Rice like that and they are great trailers, really sturdy and last for donkeys years.
One word of warning keep a very close eye on the floor, the wooden ones can rot easily. It's so important to ake sure the floor is in tip top condition, no damp bits or anything and check the floor from underneath reguarly.

Yay, happy new trailer day!!! :)
