When I tried Don out everything went fine until I asked him to canter - I was using someone else's jumping saddle which unbalanced me, and I got it a right flap, so when he cantered he took off and carted me around the school for a few circuits till I got him back. So I've been taking things slowly working on walk and trot, doing transitions and circles etc just to make sure the brakes and steering are all working - which they are, so the other day I was thinking "will I try a canter?" then as I passed the door of the school he spooked at something and took off yeargh! I lost my stirrups when he spooked, so total brown trouser moment, but within a half a dozen strides I had him back to trot again. Hmm, I wonder if I can do that on purpose? so I tentatively asked for a canter and did half a circuit then asked for trot and he came straight back, so I asked again and this time I went two circuits. Changed the rein same thing. Whoo-hoo!
I got him a new bridle and slightly different bit this morning, I forgot to get a martingale, so I rode without - I was a wee bit nervous as he seemed to be trying to "'lean" on the martingale, only there wasn't one, which took him by surprise, but I chanced a canter and we got it - even managed to do a 20 metre circle - both reins!
