Wow, what an eye-opener. I have been struggling with my little fat cob for over a year now and even lost my nerve lately as he naps, spooks as an evasion to work and generally isn't happy unless he's following someone. I haven't cantered him for months as its just too much work for me and I get physically very tired.
I asked my friend this morning if I could ride her 15.3 IDXTB in the school to see what a 'big horse' feels like as I haven't ridden one for years. Well, we took the lunge line down in case I needed my friend to lead me around because of my nerves but I was transformed within minutes. I just felt safe and walked round on my own and was cantering around after 5 minutes! My friend was amazed at the new me and, apparently, my position was brilliant and I looked like a different person than when she sees me ride my cob. The best bit was I was grinning from ear to ear and didn't want to stop.
Unfortunately, I now feel I must sell my cob and try and find something more suitable so I can enjoy myself again and that is going to be hard, to see him go. We're going to swap horses later this week and go for a hack with me in front and I'm looking forward to it.

How long have you had your cob?

My cob was like this when I first had him nearly 6 years ago, but always had a bit of a spark. It still takes a lot of hard work to actually get him to canter, but he's got better and better lately and has also mellowed, is more loving etc. I have often felt I should get a different horse, which would still have to be a cobbier type due to my height/weight etc and I do love them, but I don't know if I could part with him. I have also been shown to be a good rider on other horses.

It sounds like you have had a breakthrough. Maybe we will buy your cob hehe. We lost our mare 9 days ago and now my husband and I are sharing 1 horse which is not ideal for hunt season (can't both of us hunt on one horse!). Not sure if we're ready, yet, though.

Good luck.x

I've had him for 2 years and he did go through a 'good patch' but really is only happy following. He is very loving and perfect in all ways but just not cut out to do much and I feel, at 46

My sect D was very naughty and would nap, spin, buck and rear to get out of work. I found that with loads of patients, schooling and forced hacking out on his own, he came right and went onto be a great little dressage and MM pony.

You say that your pony is fat.....maybe he finds being ridden physically difficult if he is carrying too much weight? Have you tried a diet?? Just a few suggestions before you give up on him, especially if you have a good relationship with him on the ground??

Yes, he's in a muzzle for 12 hours a day but tbh even when he was the right weight he was the same. I have been having lessons with him and a very experienced young girl has tried to get him going but it is hard work. I only weigh 8 stone too so I doubt he even feels me on his back.
