Dont ever post in here but its the middle of the night and cant wake my friends up.
Our german shepherd has just died! - My grandmother woke me at 12.45 to say that he was restless and breathing heavily, he hadnt eaten all of his dinner tonight but apart from that was fine, he was breathing very radiply and he looked uncomfortable, his stomach looked large and there was a lot of movement in it - when he breathed out his stomach went like he was breathing in. We called the 24 hour vets and they said to come straight in but he is a big dog and I couldnt lift him into the car, his walking was very bad and he didnt want to go so we brought him back into the house, I called my dad to come and help me he lives 15 minutes away but by 1.20 he was dead.
Im just in such shock he was 10 but so full of life it was so sudden. I dont know what it could of been, im gutted and my nan is heart broken.
The vets were no help at all, I called them crying saying I cant get him in the car please can a vet come out but they wouldnt.
Im pleased that I didnt get him in the car now though as he would have died on the way and it would have stressed him out.
Ill never know what it was but I hope he is feeling better now where ever he is.
Good night Risky - you were such a good boy - we will miss you so much

(((((HUGS)))))

So sorry for you and your family. It's trite I know but at least it was quick for him and he went at home. There was none of the "he's getting very old / illl, should we let him go" dilemma for you.

Try to remember the good times with him and I'm sure that where ever he is now he is painfree.

RIP Risky.

Thank you so much - thats exactly what I needed to hear! Im pleased we didnt get him in the car etc - even if we had got there with him still alive I think it would have been the same outcome.
Its just mad - we have 4 dogs and he was the youngest. My 20 year old jack russell is asleep in her bed - totally unaware of whats going on ! I cant believe that when I went to bed tonight I thought everything was ok.

{{{Hugs}}} and sympathy to you and your family.

Can't be easy when the youngest dog dies first, even though 10 years old, I know it would feel wrong and strange to me. Maybe it's better for them when it just happens out of the blue, but it must have been a shock for you all to go through.

R.I.P. Risky.

More hugs from Sweden.

Poor you how horrible. I know it's not nice having them pulled about but would it ease your mind to have a pm done to see what it was? It may have been a poison that killed him (though it sounds like a problem my friend had with her GSD, heart and build up of fluid) and you would need to know what it was and where he got it.

Re the vet...one was struck off round here recently for refusing to come out to a dog in distress. I know it wouldn't have saved him but they didn't know that.

Thank you all so much for your kind words - Im so grateful !
We have just buried him, I couldnt put him through a PM. We are all heart broken.
Very interesting to hear what your saying about vets - im pleased we didnt get him there cause it was to late to save him and the stress would have been to much but I wish they had come out and maybe the last few minutes would have been easier for him, although it did seem very peaceful.
I personnally dont think it was poisioning, the dogs dont go off our land and they only get walked in one of the fields and we keep quite an eye on them.
Thank you all so much for your hugs are helping ! You are all so kind.

Really sorry to hear about your dog.

Unfortunately it sounds like bloat which would be why the vets insisted you took him to them as his only chance of survival would have been emergency surgery.

If they had come to you it would have wasted time and time is of the essence with bloat.

So sorry to hear this - (((hugs))) for you, and RIP Risky. I agree with DM that it sounds very like bloat

Although it must be a tremendous shock to you at least you know he wasnt suffering for a long time, and he is pain free now

Aw, hugs to you and your nan. My first thought was torsion, but bloat is probably more likely, two of my worst nightmares as a GSD owner, however he was a good age and it sounds like he had a peaceful departure at home with those he loved, RIP.

It does sounds like bloat, and unless seen pdq, it can kill in a matter of an hour......your vet could do very little out of practice, hence why they would have wanted him in, and time is of the essence.

R.i.p

I thought my rotti was having one a week ago, started gulping air, licking the floor, trying to be sick, I was at my vets within 10 mins, usually a 30 minute journey

, thank god she was ok, just farting all night when got back home

So sorry to hear this, RIP Risky. I agree with others, it sounds like bloat. I also agree that sadly a vet probably wouldn't have been able to save him. We lost a GSD with bloat, I had him at the vets within 20 minutes of his stomach beginning to swell and he had surgery, but went downhill and died the next night. At least you lad was at home with you.
