Loads of auto's/diesels around here lol, we're the opposite looking for a diesel/manual.

Have a day up in northamptonshire!!

If you want a diesel auto shogun then you might be better looking at a 2.8 td pajero. There are quite a few around and plenty of import centres around too. (Not sure if you will find leather though but it's worth a try) Bristol has lots of import centres. I found lots of Pajeros on Autotrader. You get more add ons with the Pajero as well compared to the shogun.

Hope this helps

Ooooo......the Terrano has been included!

There's loads around here. Do a search on Auto trader. I picked up details for about 30 on there.

Love the Disco's but I prefer the new light cluster on the Td5. I know, I'm very picky. Don't think we can get one of those for £10k.

I found, when comparing, that the Terranos were by far the lower mileage. Alot of the Discoveries even at X and Y reg had done well over 100,000 miles. Very off putting paying that much for a "new" car only to find out it's done far more miles than your "old" car.

You've only been looking a day! Widen your search to include Discoveries, there are absolutely loads at that price.

I wanted to go for a car with lower running costs - LR and Jeeps are amongst the most expensive!

goto Chelsea - plenty of them tractors there ;-)

Seriously - Wilsons Epsom, Geyfords Wallington and Ancasters in Croydon for Nissan (drive a Primera myself).

Mitsubishi is Kingswood - can't remember the name of the dealers - Waterhouse Lane - used to work next door.

used to work at Legal and general up the road about 12 years ago

with these 4x4s it's worth going to a dealer and getting a warranty than buying private and finding you're getting high repair bills

also the dealers are all networked so prob. quicker to go into say Ancasters and say you want a Terrano, diesel, auto, leather and let them find you one.

Have you thought about ebay, many of the sellers (especially with BIN prices) are dealers of some sort. Teranno's...

Patches,

Just a note on the Discovery. The Upgraded TD5 (that you mention) is worth looking our for because the self levelling air suspension (great for towing) was included on all models from GS up, whereas on the previosu version only the ES (top of the range) version had it. The Disco is far an away the best car we've ever towed with, we've got the updated version and its fantastic. You may be better bighting the bullet and going for a slightly older one, but trying to get an ES for the purpose of towing. But newer ones are possible for under £10k...

You see I like the look of Discoveries and I know they would tow all day. I have just always found them, from my limited experience, to be underpowered. 2.5tdi isn't that big an engine for such a heavy car. Gear ratios used to be a problem on the very old models but I believe that was solved.

The Terrano weighs less (ok so I know that means it only tows 2800kgs) but it has a 2.7 or a 3.0 diesel depending on the age of the vehicle. More oomph when towing uphill with two horses in the back.

In fairness, I prefer to drive the terrano as it feels and handles like a car to drive. When I sit in a Discovery, I feel like I'm at the wheel of a minibus. Then I have this other issue that in some ways the Discoveries age less than the Terranos because they are so classical in looks.....then I get all confuzzled and can't decide!

See. I'm so indecisive!

Just sold my Terrano, absolutely loved it and whole family didnt want to part with it, super cars, versatile and great to tow with.

Only downside was cost of parts, v.expensive even when my father doing all the work, to maintain.

and the cost of parts is relative

nissan's go on and on and on and on - bit like mercedes

don't think you can say that for discos - notorious for certain parts of them failing

my primera gets treated like a truck - unmade roads, full load of feed from cashncarry, brings hay in from fields if necessary in haymaking, absolutely filthy and still carries on being reliable as ever and it's now 11 yrs old (auto petrol 2ltr) and wouldn't have anything else.

I was thinking how we paid less for brake pads for the Terrano than we did for my son's poxy 1 litre 12v Corsa

Parts are expensive these days for any vehicle. Nissans do run on and on. It's no coincidence that alot of Nissans become Taxis or that the local Rural Police force here have Terranos as their marked vehicles.

Having towed with both Dico and Terrano (both older models) the terrano was far better. The disco was underpowered (2.5TDi) and not particularly stable in comparison.
As I say this was an old model disco, I'm sure they are now much improved.

Patches,

Whilst you are correct that 2.5litre doesn't seem much for such a big car, the engine on the TD5 is a 5-cylinder, and therefore is actually more powerful (and produces more torque, the important bit for towing) than many of the 3 litre engined vehicles which only have 4-cylinders.

As an example I have just done a google search, the Terrano 2.7 Td has a max Bhp of 123, compared to 136 Bhp on the TD5. The Torque of the disco is 232lb/ft versus 205lb/ft on the Terrano. On the 3.0 TD Terrano, the max Bhp is 156, which is more than the Disco, but the importan tbit for towing is still less, at 224lb/ft versus 232 on the Disco. The article I found on the Terrano actually points out that torque is more important on vehicles of this type. Whilst the disco is heavier, it is more powerful, offering all round benefits.

The older 2.5 tdi versions were only 4-cylinder and less powerful, as pointed out by Ben_and_Jerrys.

Its a shame you have up'd you budget as I know where one is for sale!!!!

Ahh well you see thats one of the reasons why I have put off advertising mine (still haven't done it!!!) I know how reliable it is and you can bet you botoom dollar that I buy a new smaller car for myself and I buy a pile of c**p and it breaks down before i get home !!!!!

Well, yes and no. LRs may not be the most reliable, but they are very plentiful and parts are cheap. They are easy to service, and one of the most economical 4x4s available. It's swings and roundabouts...

Can't fault my Nissan so far mind, touch wood! I went down the pick up truck route though. its a twin cab 52 reg, had about 45k mileage whan I bought it, does 30+MPG on diesel. 2.5 TD engine and tows trailer and 2 nags like they weren't there - and we have HILLS round here! (Oh and it cost £8k no VAT)

Also has the advantage that I can go collect a big bale of haylage as soon as I need one, instead of waiting for a delivery!

I lurve it!
