Ive never thought I was a great rider, always just thought of myself as "I can get on and steer"
I have 2 horses, one practically retired, and one Ive just broken in. So both of them get up to an hour quiet hacking.

I went on camp at the weekend, and although I had a fab time I now feel a bit despondant. Ive realised I cant ride :(
The first horse I rode hated me and nearly ditched me. The second one was fab but I made so many mistakes, and it was only his honesty in the jumping that got us through it :/
(Ive done a report thing in pic gallery for anyone that wants to read more about camp)

Now Im just a bit like "meh", How can I improve myself when all I can do at moment is hack :/ Im thinking I need to get my trailer fixed and get my youngster schooling and doing lessons with good instructors.

sorry, this is pretty pointless, just cant believe how bad Ive gotten :(

Hi,

Don't be so hard on yourself. After riding your own horses for so long you can't expect to get on a strange one and be spot on.

Use this experience as a driver to get your youngster schooled and do a bit more with a good instructor. Set yourself some goals and work towards them.

Good luck

:D

believe me, i know how you feel. i prefer to ride by myself than have others see how crap i am. i am taking up lessons, as i have to. (cant really afford to). i know i am capable of alot more, as i used to reasonably good. fear is my worst enemy. but saying that, when i came back riding after being away having my children, i got so frustrated by my inability to do what i used to be able to do. eg. legs not doing what they were capable of. cried myself silly a few times. have been hacking with a very little amount of jumping over the last few years. have finally decided that i just have to have lessons, as much as i love just hacking, i want to be better so no other choice. i think lessons are your way to go, and i bet you are not half as bad as you think. its all confidence!!!! :)

Can you have lessons in your field? You dont necessarily need a school just some electric tape will make you a rough oblong to ride in. Riding your own and happy hacking is the easiest way to become a wee bit lazy, speaking from experience :D So dont despair! You just need some educated eyes on the ground to tell you what you're doing and how to correct it.

Where abouts in yorks are u?

If it helps I feel the same.

I used to hunt, PC and ride and break youngsters. I thought I was fairly ok...until I got Samba.

I have been hacking for about 4-5years without doing much else. And now shes forward going, responding to the leg etc I want her to be nice.

I am now schooling her and I cant sit up, keep control of my legs, ride a 20m circle. Its horrible. I am getting lessons now to sort myself out, I dont have school though :( . Give me a s888y pony to ride fine ask me to school and apparantly I cant do it.

Once the grass is cut for hay, I'll be able to ride on there, we have a schooling area :)
And there is an arena down the road that can be hired (but its a RS so depends on when its free)
I cant school yet though, Jimmy has just mastered walk and trot on hacks and needs to learn canter, and then I can gradually start getting back to proper riding :S

Im about 10 mins drive from Xscape

Thanks Toffee, its nice to hear Im not alone, I couldnt believe how poor I was when we were jumping and stuff at the weekend :O

I'm sure you can improve yourself out hacking. You can develop a really good seat staying in whilst your horse (if he does) spooks at stuff, generally show him the world of plastic bags, umbrellas and so on, and get him thoroughly traffic proofed/flapping pigeon proofed - also, you can do a bit of ad lib cross country jumping over logs, learn to do gates from horseback (which requires considerable gymnastic thingies from both you and the horse).

Ive never known a youngster like it... He doesnt spook at anything (even when pheasants fly out and make me jump) He did his first gates yesterday :D Was very proud of that, hes hacking alone and in company. He saw his first umbrella yesterday and was more interested in the dog :D
If he'd just quit pulling me into hedges to eat branches he'd be spot on LOL

I feel your pain, rubysgold, I think a lot of it comes down to getting so used to riding your own horse that another one feels just plain wrong! I had a real shock trying out a new horse last year - none of the gears were in the right place :D

I know how you feel! I've had my girl a year and hadn't rode for years before that. She is used to the crap way I ride and we get on fine. I wouldn't like to ride anything else as I would look like a numpty although thinking of going to an RI for a lesson as we don't have access to a school so I'm prepared to look stupid!

Rubbish! You can ride, I remember a video of you jumping your mare and I thought you were a really nice rider. You just had a bad day or two, kick on. :)
