I ride a horse (which one day I hope to buy) for a very ignorant someone, the horse is at a livery yard and the owner only comes down about once a month if that, 2 years ago a very dodgy dentist was called in to do this horses teeth and 6 month later when I had my dentist look at it (I knew this guy was dodgy!!) the horses mouth was a state, I have been having the horses teeth done behind the owners back as I know she won't have it done and the horses mouth is very good now, I had the horses teeth done about 3-4 weeks ago, but the owner in all her wisdom is now (after 2 years!!) having the dodgy guy come back next week, and I'm just praying that he doesn't notice that her teeth are freshly done, he doesn't use a gag or look at the horses teeth (he's quality!!)
Wish me luck everyone and any excuses that I could use as to why her mouth is so splendid are much apprieciated!! Mind you he is so **** that he may not notice, just hope he doesn't wreck the good work.

That's silly. Just tell her that the horse was just done. Why would you have someone spend their money needlessly? Very confused here.

insinuate that some of the dentists have been heard to molest the animals when they are under.Be quick to deny you said it but then say you know of another who is really cheap.

Crumbs Geordie, molestering with a rasp!!!
Its a very complicated story with lots of yard banter and bitchiness that I wouldn't want to bore you with, but I think I have understated my involvment with the horse, she has been on loan(ish) to me. She is such a fab horse and I want to buy her so much and I've done so much with her, I believe horses have the right to good dental care etc, I couldn't ride a horse knowing the saddle didn't fit or its teeth were bad.

So why would you allow a cowboy to come in and potentially damage the horse? Even more confused

. Surely if you love the horse then you will do the best for it?

Loan-ish? Does the owner know you ride the horse?

I'd just have to tell her the horse's teeth have been done. Be brave.

I don't think I'd tell her. If someone who clearly thought she wasn't expected to have my horses teeth done decided to have them done without my knowledge on a regular basis, I'd be pretty annoyed, and would certainly think about ending the maybe loan.

In your position, I'd probably tell the owner that someone else had the dentist out, and you'd noticed some problems and asked if he would look whilst he was there. That way it doesnt look like you were deliberately going behind her back, and the bad dentist wont have to come. If he is aware that he did a rubbish job last time, he will know that the teeth shouldnt have magically fixed themselves.

I agree with gnubee. I would tell the owner that the dentist was up on the yard apologise if she feels you had interefered but you had the teeth done then as it was going to be cheaper as you split the call out charge. Apologise again for interfering but you only thought you were helping her out as you reaslise she is busy and you thought it may help.

Well to be honest what you have done could be illegal. you have had the horses teeth done without the knowledge of the owner and it may be that this is the same as administering a drug or other treatment without the owners knowledge as well. (Im not talking emergency vet stuff as they are qualified).

I think you need to tell the owner what you have done rather than have a butcher dentist mess it all up again. In future keep the owner informed. I know the horses mouth was a mess but if I was the owner Id be bl**dy furious with you ....sorry.

I agree with spaniel - you shouldn't go behind an owners back like that despite the dentists credentials. Its really dishonest. Plus - how do you know that this dentist is rubbish despite another dentists opinion? Are you qualified in equine teeth? I know its hard who to believe these days but when you take a horse on loan - thats just it - its on loan and you owe it to the owner to tell the truth. Especiallly with regards to its health. If you thought there was a problem or the horse was in discomfort - you should have mentioned it way back. Legally its the owners decision who the dentist is - not yours. ... sorry.

you could just let the dodgy dentist do the teeth and say nothing.Cross one bridge at a time.Your only beef is with the owner -not the dentist and he may say nothing.I think you might have an exciting menage a trois....

I'd also come clean and just say you had them done recently, as you'd noticed that she was mouthing the bit funny or something. I assume she's already told you that this guy is coming, so you'll need to be honest and just say that you felt like you'd interfered and was worried about owning up sooner. If someone had had the dentist to my horse when he was in their care, I'd be quite glad that they took such care with him - after all, the owner won't be seeing the horse ridden and so won't notice problems developing like you will.

that sounds like good advice to me.Don't let her feel like she is anyway guilty or that she doesn't treat the horse well. If you buy the horse then you can tell her the truth if you still want to.
