Well took 4 of the gang to Stilebridge for dressage on Sunday, when i was about to go in for my test B noticed Monty was loose, so went to go sort him out.

Monty seems to have this habit when he is tied to the lorry of pulling back until he is free and he broke his headcollar this time. He is perfectly fine when tied up on the yard, it is just when tied to the lorry - weird?

When i got back to the lorry i was too busy with Blue to notice how B had sorted Monty out but as we were leaving i realised he had chained him to the lorry

proceeded to tell him this is extremely dangerous and his £6k horse is quite like to pull part of the lorry off and go charging round the car park battering himself with it on the end of the chain.

Said next time just leave him on the lorry, but i think i shall have to keep remember to say this before B chains him up again!

Yes - it is mega dangerous. A pony that was tied to a lorry broke free and galloped round dragging bits of the trailer and killed a child.

It is really safer to leave them in the lorry unless someone can stay with them all the time.

He is more likely to pull backwards and then lose his balance and wack his head on the lorry. I've seen a horse concuss itself like that - not a pretty sight with the blood streaming out of it's nostrils. It took about a week for it to recover.

Personally I never tie up to a lorry/trailer (I've seen so many accidents at shows where owners have left their 'precious' animals tied up then wandered off for ages) and always reload after classes or if I have to go off and do something.

Not having a go at you Lill - it's just one of my horsey rants I'm afraid.

blimey i never knew we shouldnt so this!!! i havent competed for 15 years and we all used to do it without thinking. i shall take heed and ask OH to hold then this season

Some centres have strict rules now that no horse may be tied to a vehicle and left unattended. Left o the vehicle ( poll guard on! ) , or attended.
Morenad mro oplaces nwo have day stables too- at a reasoebl rate- for those who are not happy to wait on their lorries.

ps. Don;t have the chains with you, and B can't use them.

We can't put all 4 on the lorry as we'd be forever loading and unloading!

3 are happy to tie up quietly with a haynet its just Monty that pulls back.

We always have the chains unfortunately as they attach in front of the partitions on our lorry, without them there the horses just try and walk forwards!

I never leave mine alone, even though she is happy to tie up. If I want to go and have a chat I take her along with me, after all she needs to catch up on the gossip with her friends too - mind you we only ever take 2 out a a time - might be tricky with 3 or 4!

We always leave on the lorry or trailer, even if lots of switching is involved. Sometimes becomes a complex procedure, but all are happy eventually.

I mainly worry about the idiots that seem to wander about in the lorry park at county shows, more than what my mare would do (sleep)

Lol we are not good enough for County Shows but our lorry was parked where we could see it on Sunday, can see the horses and the lorry in the background of the photos i took!

Always try to park where we can see it. But we only really go to Duckhurst and Stilebridge and Stilebridge can see the lorry and Duckhurst we know a lot of people there so they tend to keep an eye on it for us if we are not there.

I have the opposite problem, my little chap hates standing on the lorry. He goes up vertical and stamps his feet in temper but when he is outside tied up with his haynet he is angelic but I must admit I don't leave him unattended. Roll on the summer so we can start going to some shows again.

I always leave mine tied to the trailer, never inside. Mine kick up a serious fuss if left in (one of mine will happily jump over the breast bar if he gets bored enough). I think Ive only ever had a horse break of twice in all the years Ive been competing. Both times I was there so it wasnt a problem.

I do have to leave them unattended sometimes like when going to enter because often Im on my own, so what else can I do?! However, if Im away for a while like walking a XC course then I will put them in with a massive haynet (and hope they dont go nuts).

I dont think people can say its dangerous to tie up outside (we've had this argument before!) because all horses are different. Trust me, you tell me Im dangerous when a heap of us are crammed into a trailer trying to release a 1/2 tonne of horse from beaching himself over the breast bar with legs flailing everywhere...!! Whereas tie him up outside and he'll doze all day!
