After I thought the pony might have sweetitch I brought him up yesterday to bath him, hoping it might make him more comfy and give me a chance to see what was going on with his skin.

Well, in the end I decided to tidy up his trace clip.... and ended up thinking "sod it" and gave him a full clip. I reasoned if he had no winter coat left he wouldnt have a reason to itch constantly, so i could then tell if he was scratching because of his coat or because of midges. I also thought if i had to end up fly rugging him at least he'd be cooler with no thick shetland coat.

It took me four hours, and i had to get the human hair clippers to do his face. The neighbours came out to watch as he was neughing and rearing up, but we did it!!!! A quick bath with some tee tree shampoo and he droed off in about 10 minutes!! phew!

Bang goes the M&M classes, but he's happier and far comfier, and that's what matters. I think he looks much smarter.

i'll post piccies later, he got his muzzle off yesterday and got out of the piggy paddock so has a HUGE grass belly and looks in foal again, so no real weightloss i'm afraid.

I have to full clip my shettie every year in May so he's due soon. He is still really hairy too. In a week or so he'll be fine to do M&M classes. Just be aware that he will now be more prone to fly bites as he has no protection so it may worth getting a fly rug anyway...

yep going to get one. I've left his legs on for the time being as I thought it'd be too tricky to do them and it'd keep his legs protected. Plus if it gets cold I can stick his rug on, and his legs will be okay.

This is it now, no more namby pambying around. he'll be trace clipped all winter and fully clipped summer. I can't believe I didnt do it before. i'd rather have to keep him warm in the colder weather than have to watch him suffer when he gets hot.

My thoughts exactly...and a bit of shivering does wonders for the waist line too although I know you're not as mean as me.LOL
