The corner of field I did him in now looks like a small bear has been massacred! Two days ago, he was barely shedding, but today it's coming off like mad. He's let go of it to a point where, if I could be at all ar5ed, I could probably get the whole lot out in one go.

I am contemplating ignoring the mares until they reach that point. atm Millie is shedding clumps, the other oldie is de-clumping in some areas and resolutely holding on in others, Kira and Salty are nowhere near as fuzzy but being near them for any length of time results in eating hair... and Hera clearly knows something the rest don't and has not started moulting at all!

My big lad is the same and because he's roan its really obvious - we're now down to the cream inner coat and that seems to be in piles all over the field. Plus the magpies are helping pluck him for me. It isn't his best look!

He was at this stage 4 weeks earlier according to last year's FB memories so has obviously only just decided summer is coming.

Am feeling smug here as clipped the lot off Mr H a couple of weeks ago.
He is currently two tone - below the original clip line from his low Irish clip the ginger is coming through. Above it he is mink.

Oh my days!
Dave looks like a "Cut & Shut". The front end has summer coat & is quite civilised. The back end looks like a moth eaten, dusty yak.

I'm getting the Hetty hoover out tomorrow. I have a horse brush attachment for it

I did that yesterday (not a Hetty, I have a cheap hoover for the purpose). I don’t have an attachment for it though, i just use the hose.

I had a whole hoover bag full of scurf and hair from the Shetland and half from the 16hh horse.

Made the mistake of de-shedding on the yard when it was just slightly too damp to brush up the hair. Had to sluice the whole thing.

Took about a cats worth of hair off her the day before and the day after. I'm losing my mind.

Surely the earliest date for a Shetland to start shedding is 1 August?
Bearing in mind I live in Shetland, so my 4 know their natural climate well, my optimist starts shedding about now and carries on shedding well into June, while the most pessimistic (realistic?) finally emerges into his glorious summer coat mid-July, and starts growing his winter coat the first week in August.

.

I've taken to brushing Archie in the field, it's easier than having to sweep the yard - although just walking him across it seems to leave a trail.

Yes, having spent all winter smug that I don't have to bother with clipping, now is when I regret it. Ginger hair everywhere and a fresh full of the joys of spring horse who cannot be bothered with this whole grooming malarky. This is one upside to there being no competitions locally at the moment.

I wish I could let the wind handle it!

We have sweet itch rugs on so she is shedding into that and it gets caught in the belly flap. Makes lovely little felted mats every day, dangling from her belly fluff.
