My novice OH wanted to come to the Boxing Day Meet mounted, for the experience and to show his support. So, I brought him along on Beowulf who is good as gold. All went swimmingly. Hacking to the meet- no problemo. Beowulf was totally chilled at the meet. We then rode through town with the hounds and a large mounted field. All good! Then a mile of roadwork. OH was confident and happy. At this point, someone with good judgement would have said 'great; let's go home now'. However, I was so sure that OH would be fine (he can hack at all paces) that I suggested we just cantered the first field or two. Big mistake. He was surprised that Beowulf wouldnt stop (I forgot to mention that they don't out hunting!) lost his balance, legs went back, stirrup came off, OH hits deck with stunt roll! Luckily no damage to OH or horse. I am in the dog house though....

OH has been reading this over my shoulder and says....

'tell OH to get off his sorry backside, lick his wounds (not literally, that would be weird, but amazing to see....), get back on a horse, and do some jumping. Worked for me. Well, hunting after two lessons worked for me, I didn't fall until jumping in the school, but glad I did fall. Makes the next time easier. And now I'm happy falling from an 18hh. Ok, not happy, but it doesn't bother me.'

I would generally agree that your OH needs to get back on and have some fun out hunting!!

This made me giggle. I dragged my OH hunting with me yrs ago. Happily the hirlings we had were fat lazy cobs, so no probs with the brakes (aimed at a hill). He keeps wanting to go out again, but I need Dolls to grow up a bit first.
