I have brought my mare in today and when I went to wash down her back end... her bits seemed open I have never noticed this before

there was no discharge and she didnt seemed bothered when I sponged her down

when I checked up on her again just befors putting her out it looked back to normal again ie closed... is this a normal thing (and I've nerer noticed before)she's just over 9 weeks pregnant and has shown no signs of being in season..also today the flies near us were relentless and she was getting harassed by them......I think I'm being paranoid or am I to worry

If there is no seal to the vulva, then it is possible that faeces or other nasties could make their way into the vagina, which could lead to ascending placentitis and subsequent abortion.

Probably best to get the vet to check her out.

There's no point worrying. It's unlikely to have been an issue to start with, or your vet would have noticed and she wouldn't have got in foal or wouldn't have kept it for long. It might be due to the increased weight in her uterus pulling on her back end. Just get the vet out asap and see if she needs to be stitched up. Well done for noticing! Vet may also say that it's not a problem, and I could be totally wrong - just like to cover all the bases with things like this.
