Luckily It was Rossi's day off today after a hard week and so as I skipped him out whilst he was eating his haynet I noticed him chewing very oddly.

He wouldnt let me look into his mouth properly (He's normally fine so must have been sore :( ) , but in glimpses I could see the lower left hand side of his gums a little red and bruised looking and then he had a long cut/burn mark on the gum in the gap between his lower front teeth and his canine teeth so luckily not where the bit lies.

I asked the YO if anything strange had happened and she said his neighbour had gotten out of his adjacent paddock and so im hoping he hasnt been kicked through the electric fencing or something! She didnt say she had noticed anything strange with Ross when she brought him in though.

So anyway I was wondering if anybody had experience with this type of injury? He is on calm and condition so the majority of his feed is relatively soft anyway but Ive put extra water in to let the conditioning cubes and alfa A soften.Apart from the soreness to touch and when eating his hay, he seems bright enough still.

How long do you think he may need off and should I try a hackamore as he isnt the type of horse that I can let have days and days off work lightly!

Any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

majority of mouth wounds heal relatively quickly and easily without human intervention unless it is a break or a tongue bitten in half but even a small cut on the gums will heal itself you could wash his mouth with a solution of salty water just incase there are any nicks you cannot see, if he is eating then leave him to it, if you can ride with a hackamore then do so for a few days but should be able to put a bit in his mouth with 5 days max. hope he is okay
