my horse has a bad back behind the saddle area. He is jumpy when it's touched or pressed. would it be best to go to the vet for a lameness workout or to the physiotherapist? What sort of thing will be done at the lameness work out. We have been quoted £200-£300 and he'll spend the day there.

Any good physio/back person etc will need a referal/permission from your vet before they will treat. They are also not qualified to diagnose so my first port of call would certainly be the vet.

I agree with all the other posts re vets first but have you had the saddle checked if its too long that could cause bruising. If the saddle is slipping back when ridden that can cause bruising as well.We had a mare on loan with a ill fitting saddle and the saddle moved back when ridden because it was too narrow.
