Three days ago my mare became very sensitive just infront of her withers, she wouldnt let me tack up and was threatening to rear when I touched it. She had been fine and I had ridden the day before. There was heat so I put ice packs on it for ten minites morning and night. This morning she was really really sensitive and I could see a small hairless lump on the right of her wither. She absolutely wouldnt let me touch it and actually reared as I tried (which she has never done). I turned her out to see if the lump would go down during the day. This afternoon when I got her in the lump was gone and there was a bleeding patch where it had sat, I have cleaned it up and she seems less sensitive now. Just wondering if anyone else had something like this? I havent a clue what it was or if I need a vet out, please help. Xx

Yes, it's called a fistula, basically an abscess in the withers. I would do a hot compress a few times a day, if she'll let you. Get some hot salt water, as hot as you can stand to put your hands in. Dunk a clean towel in, wring out, hold on the wither until it cools down. Repeat for about 10mins. Also, leave any rugs off, as any kind of pressure on there will be incredibly painful. If she's no better in a day or two, get the vet as you may need antibiotics.
