The horse sounds nice just what Im after but its about 150 miles away/3 hours away. Im not keen to drive that far tbh especially as I'll be going back for a second viewing. What do you think?

only you can answer that one in fairness. i travelled further to view my boy and then went back up to collect him, took all day! if you feel the horse is really worth it then maybe it's worth a try.

could you ask for some videos of the horse doing what you want to do with it so it will give you a better idea, such as schooling, hacking, jumping, xc?

id find some thing else to view either in the same area or on the way there/way back makes it much more worth it that way.

im in devon and have viewed/bought from the midlands and east sussex the horses were worth it!

this is a tough question. I drove 4 hours to see a horse I liked. I would have preferred to have tried her a couple of times and seen her vetted. I did make an offer and sadly she failed the vetting quite badly. I can only advise that you ask for video clips etc. and make sure that they have the facilities you want, in order to try the horse really thoroughly. Maybe you could pack a bag and find a B&B to stay overnight and try the horse again the next day, if you really like it.

I went 4hours to view a unschooled ex racehorse,nd then all the way back to bring it back! extremly stupid of me,but now shes jumping amaingly and is well worth it. The secenery was nice on the way though!

You've worked hard to find one suitable, it has to be worth the look. Take a friend or two, as they will pick up different things to you, so you can have a long chat on the way back. Also take a camera/video of your own so you can look at the pictures another day to make up your mind if it is worrth the milage of a second viewing.

Living on the Devon/Cornwall border most things are hours away from here, including competitions that I go to. We need to travel the horses this weekend to Bristol, well that's an hour to Exeter then another 2 to Bristol. You just do it.

Could you ask somebody on here, whose opinion you can trust and who lives close by to view it?

I was going to do an initial viewing of a Fell on here for somebody who lived down south. It was just going to be a 'is it what it says it is in the advert, is it sound and is there anything glaringly wrong with it' type of viewing. The person selling was told this, so they didn't think we were time wasters.

Make sure you have loads of up to date pics and videos, this might work out expensive but on fuel prices atm then probs not, couldnt you make a weekend of it pop down sat morning go and veiw, if you like get a b and b enjoy the sites then go back sunday?

xx

Its a tough one. I travelled hundreds of miles viewing horses. Despite long conversations on the phone they were still rarely the same horses as the ad said.
As I have always been looking for what everyone wants ie 15.2-17hh safe horse suitable for or to bring on for RC, I now would not travel to see a horse that had been advertised for very long. Theory being that there are so many people looking for the same if they are not sold, they are not what it says on the tin.
I know people say wait for videos but if I had waited my lad would have been sold, just like all the others that 'were' what it said on the tin

It is so hard though

If you really like it then yes it's probably worth the journey! I travelled 3.5hrs to see my lad, I saw a video and loads of pics, drove up to see him and tried him doing everything I wanted then picked him up the following weekend (had him vetted in between). He is my perfect horse and would have driven to Scotland for him :D

Good idea quirky but I dont know anyone willing to do that for me. The horse does sound nice though if a little older than I want and I could see another on the way back. Staying overnight is a no go. Its travelling all over the country Im getting fed up with, but my little car bless it, keeps taking me there. Its doable in a day but I just dont fancy the driving.

I would say it depends on what you want, I travelled four hours for my mare because I had seen a video of her jumping and loved her, I wasn't bothered she was bigger, a bit out of condition. Didn't ask to see her hacking because if she did her job which I was fairly sure she would I was prepared to risk it as I would happily have paid double what the woman was asking. But if you want a horse that ticks a lot of boxes I would be less likely to go I think. Probably makes no sense!?!

After travelling the breadth of the country, several years ago, to see a number of completely unsuitable animals, who were smaller/finer/sharper than we required for a novice rugby playing OH, even though we had read ads carefully and had long phone conversations prior to the visits, only to find the perfect horse by word of mouth within hacking distance of home, we now only ever travel for up to an hour.
Over the last 5 years we have bought 3 lovely mares within our specified distance, 2 of them were the first we viewed and the other was only the 3rd.
I think we have learned to be very specific in our list of requirements and to check very carefully over the phone that the horse meets them. At least if the horse isn't as advertised then we don't feel that we have wasted too much time/money going to see it.

I travelled 360 miles each way to view a weanling

But ONLY after many emails/phone conversations/photos & videos being sent through of foal & parents

It was worth it :D & yes, I'd do it again

If you are seriously looking and not just casually seeing what is on offer I would definitely go provided you have asked specific questions over the phone so you know the horse is as described. I travelled 5 hours to see a horse I hadnt even seen a photo of (!) just because of her breeding and 4 years on I would not change her for the world. Sometimes it is just meant to be and, if the horse isnt right you have only lost a day whereas if the horse is right and you dont go, you will have lost a wonderful animal. Better to find out than wonder what if ....
