I don't really want to ask this - but how much?

I need to reduce the livestock, as growing in numbers and I want to have a major change in discipline

So how much is my grey fellow worth?

16hh Selle Francais x 10 years old.
Showjumper by trade but very quiet
Jumps 1.20m at home with squealing ninny on his back
BSJA - Qualified Blue Chips two years running, qualified 1m and 1.05m Scope 2010.
Actual £364, Notional £177
Has the unique quality of really not wanting to touch poles, something I cannot breed or teach!
If I wasn't a muppet would have been placed Hickstead (got into every jump off!). Pretty much guarantees a double clear if you sit still and keep cantering. Hence why he is so good in tough qualifiers.
Dressage to Elementary unaffiliated
Never done cross country at all (except popped a few at home).
Not hunted as too precious
Stunning markings and noticed everywhere

Downside
Severe sweet itch and needs to live inside during the day time in the summer.

He technically is jumping 1.10m / 1.20m (as apparently Hickstead have a different measuring stick!!) - the trouble is I don't want to any more, as I think I am just too cr*p and not improving :(

Might have to get someone to ride him to get his 4 DC's newcomers

At the Warwick Show Centres the judges said "we love your horse he is so honest" = you're rubbish and the poor horse still took you round.

What does your instructor/trainer think?

We all have days where we don't think we're good enough for our horse, I'm certainly not good enough for mine but is she happy, yes.

You are not too C$%P, you probably have just gone as far as you can with him and need a change. A different horse would revitalise your SJ vibe.

Hard to say - I paid £5.5 K for Maggie last year when she was 10, jumped 1.30s, winnings to 1.20m, around £500 on her card. I realise that was a pretty good deal though. There are a lot of decently priced sj horses out there at the moment.

But don't be silly- of course you mustn't sell him, he is great at dressage - stick to that for a while! Your horse doesn't care if he won't jump 1.20's - only you do. Stop putting so much pressure on yourself. X

DD I really don't think a new horse will help, to be honest I don't want to be jumping massive jumps and I'm also pee'd off with always being by myself.

I train alone, compete alone and its getting to be soul destroying. This is not fun any more.

So new thing is to quit and get a polo pony and play a team sport (polocrosse not polo!).

Dinky is hard work as 'has' to be in, so cannot be tipped out into a field.

Peer or Dinky has to go and if I do get into polocrosse I will have to sort Dinky out when I am away for the weekend, which either means paying someone or buying screens to give him a midge free large barn.

Not sure what the market is like but I would definatly pay about 8k for a horse of that quality, its just a matter of seeing what people would pay. If I was taller I would buy him! :p

Sorry to hear you feel like this. So what if you don't want to jump big fences - I'm sure he'd still have a smile on his face cantering around an 85cm to be honest.

Ok, so there are lots of horses that can jump 1m20 tracks - hundreds of them. However, there are not that many that are happy to do this with an amateur that gets it wrong sometimes (hey I'm one of them! ;)) and just keeps coming. Having that sort of forgiving and generous nature is worth every penny. Yes the sweet itch is a pain, but lots of people have their horses in during the day in summer so it's not a deal breaker.

Totally out of touch with what showjumpers go for, but don't think you have to pitch him low.....

Have you tried polocrosse? I know that it is a great sport having played it for 10 years of my life but it is a major time commitment (most of your spring summer weekends). Showjumping is great to be able to just nip off to and it sounds like you have a wonderful horse there.

Am really struggling to price him TBH. Wish I had transport, I would have him for a couple of months so I had 2 to take round and do NCs on :( He really is incredibly stunning to look at...

Ditto GGS...also, I've been playing polo for a hile now and am on the hunt for another pony, you really need 2-3 to play or you're constantly hiring/leasing/scrouing extras so your plan of reducing numbers might ot work?

I played polocrosse 15 years ago (OMG I'm old!) so I know its going to take all my weekends and be a 2-day affair. I'm in a position to be able to do that (and even have a nice lorry to stay in and do the long trips!)

I used to play polo and I know I cannot afford that and would need 3+ ponies, hence aiming for polocrosse only.

I compete every weekend showjumping, but I'm always on my own. Although I've met a few nice people I'd love to be with a bigger groups, as (sorry if this is 'woe is me') most of my friends have left Gloucestershire now, I'm a boss at work. So literally social life is zero, Showjumping social life is zero and hence why polocrosse is appealing. At least then I can still spend all my time with horses, but have friends too!

Sorry if it sounds like I'm moaning!

Fancy Dorset Showground Friday-Sunday next week? A big bunch of us are going, jumping all sorts of classes and grooming for each other when we aren't riding. Its a fab show. I'm taking someone elses newbie horse and will mainly focus on the drinking and party in the evenings. Come join us!!! Seriously, it will be wicked. PM me if you want... ;) xx

Come and do more RC stuff!! Can we not persuade you to join our mini eventing team? None of us particularly good, or particularly competitive, but enjoy our weekends gossiping and scaring ourselves?

See if you can blag an entry to the Cricklands unaffliliated champs next weekend - as a BSJA registered bod, you can still jump the bigger classes :) V and I doing the 85cm and will probably be quite windy at that, but going from Sat am to Sun pm anyway.

Also, you doing somerford show tomorrow? BSJA there in main ring, but also loads of people/ beer tent/ social?
