I gave my 27yr old mare a hunter clip last week! She's very very very fluffy and gets very itchy, she is also pretty hardy too! anyway, its pooring down with rain, and she was fine earlier but I'm worried she is going to get cold, but if I put a rug on her in JULY it will have to be a medium as her light weight won't stay dry in this weather! (old mark todd thats seen better days)

am I mean leaving her naked if she doesn't seem cold? She won't go in the field shelter, so there's no point moving her into that field, she does have a couple of trees to stand under!
 
It's still pretty warm, she should be fine but if you find her shivering tonight pop her medium on and go out rug shopping tomorrow!
 
I can barely walk around outside at the moment its so humid and close out there! I think she will be ok but maybe invest in a cheap rainsheet :-)
 
I'm sure she'll be fine, but might be worth investing in a decent lightweight turnout if the weather is going to continue like this as she might struggle a bit if she's clipped and it chucks it down for days on end. Hope Valley have got some cheap decent ones in at the moment if that helps
 
It's not so much that the temp could leave her cold, but with a hunter clip she doesn't have a waterproof outer layer to keep next to her skin dry. If its raining heavily or constantly she could easily get cold through being soaked. I would get another lightweight so you can swop them round if current one is wet through. Stick some tent re proofer on it too.
 
Goodness me! Yes, I would get a rug on her PDQ! If she is really fluffy when not clipped then she may have Cushings.

She is actually fine, have just been down and she's not in the slightest big cold!

I have thought about cushings before and I honestly don't think she has it, however they are due their jabs in 2 months so I am going to her tested just to double check! but I have just again looked at the symptoms and she doesn't have a single one of them! She defo doesn't have any problems shedding her coat, he comes out like theres no tomorrow, its just it gets really long! but she is a conny x tb and has gradually got fluffier as she's got older. I'd be really surprised if a test came back saying she has it! she also has no problems keeping weight on, you can't see her ribs or anything!

Possibly, with hindsight, a chaser clip would have been better, then her loins would have been waterproof and dry.
 
I'd get her checked. Getting fluffier as they get older is usually a symptom. It's not a side effect of connie x tbs just getting older. But I would be careful not to leave her unrugged in heavy/ constant rain in the meantime.
 
I would definately get her checked the earlier its found the better. Just had mine done, pretty convinced he had it but it come back negative, there was a voucher you could download to get the test down for free.
 
Not meaning to be harsh but really why would you clip out a horse and not own adequate rugs to keep the rain off her if need be?
Or as has been said in hindsight just giving her a bib and belly or a chaser?

I would also check for cushings, a long thick coat is a sign even if it sheds. My old boy was 27 and never grew a thick coat... he was a connie x tb too...
