Last night I took a bit of a tumble off the spooky boy after he decided that he no longer likes birds and they are in fact the most terrifying creatures ever put on the earth.
Cue him taking a sharp left turn, galloping off across the arena with me hanging off the left side of him, then him making another sharp left when he got to the fence (at least he didn't try to jump it

) thus unceremoniously dumping me at his feet before he hot-tailed it over the other side!!!

I landed on my hip followed by my shoulder and finally my head hit the deck!! OUCH!!!

Just to add insult to injury, after I got back on he then proceeded to spook at the dent I had made in the sand!!!!

I *thought* previously that my hat was quite generously padded but after the clomp I got when landing on sand, I am now not so convinced and I'm looking to get a new one.

I currently have a Champion jockey skull (the one with the purply/red lining). I don't mind looking like a mushroom head - all I want is a more padded hat so if the same happens again it won't be so bad - any recommendations anyone?

Sorry, I don't have any recommendations (although those Champion ones with the silver vent going down the middle are all the rage at my yard, so I assume they're fairly good since EVERYONE is buying them) - but can I just say that the thing about him spooking at the dent in the sand made me squawk with laughter like a crazy person. My dog ran out of the room in terror.

Champion ventiars. They are comfy, stylish, safe and i think they are quite cheap in some shops. I got mine for £60, which is good considering they are good hats.

I've switched from a Champion Ventair (the ones that are all the rage) to a Champion Elite Skull. I kept finding the Ventair would work it's way down my forehead as I jumped. The odd thing was the ventair was a 56 but was too big, the skull is a 57 but feels snug (verging on tight).
I think the best thing to say is the best hat is the one that fits YOU best (I tried loads and nearly all seemed too shallow)

Looks like I'll be going shopping to try on all the different types this weekend!!! Certainly too stiff and sore to ride!!

Charmaine18 - I'm glad I made you giggle!! I was pretty p'd off at the time but I have been sniggering to myself over it all day!!

Ive got the charles owen adventura, it saved my life 10 months ago when i came off head first onto road surface at high speed. If i had not been wearing it there is no doubt i would not be typing this now. Was very messy and was scraped into the back of an ambulance but miraculously my head was unscathed. That hat literally saved my life and i will NEVER get on a horse without one now. Needless to say i bought a new one

The gatehouse HSI is supposed to be the best on the market but it doesnt fit my head! lol, so opted for the charles owen. I thank my lucky stars i did

I went to the shop with the intention of buying the same hat, only to discover that the same size/style/model as I had just dented didn't fit?!

So I went from charles owen to champion ventair. whatever fits best will protect best, IMHO.

I have the Champion Ventair and love it. I worked in a tack shop a while ago and met the Champion rep, she showed me a cross section of the hat and there is an impressive amount of protection in them, compared to a cheaper hat. They are up to British Safety standards which some hats believe it or not are not.

I thought these http://www.parkgateequestrian.co.uk/ had the highest safety rating ever awarded to a riding hat?

I personally use the ventair because they are about as slim line a hat as you can get, have had them for about 5 years, a couple of months before the rest of the yard cottoned on to how much cooler they look

ETS: I'm talking mince, it's the first SHOWJUMPING hat to get that safety award! I take it the skull caps have had better safety than the SJer for a while!
