Well my day started with great intentions! I got up early went to the yard and today is they day i was going to start schooling the Shetland as he's become naughty!

(Both ponies have had the physio out, Cola has also had the vet out there's no issues medically and we had James Spy EDT out last Thurs too!)

I jumped my pony, he is getting really good at it! Considering not seen a fence in 4 months! Flew over 85cm spreads whilst I hung on for dear life! (knew I shouldn't have pulled his mane!!)

Then it was mini pony's turn........

Little back ground information. Pony didn't like his legs being touched but this is now sorted, he was just being fussy(I resorted to the hand on a stick trick reccommeneded on here - Thank you!) He has now started bucking with his little off lead rein rider once he's had enough of being ridden in the school which is 40 mins or so! He has lost quite a bit weight since we got him and is clipped out as he sweats just standing in the yard so at first I put it down to feeling 'fresh'.

I got on.... Twice round the school in walk and he reared! I hit the deck for the first time since I was 15!! I DONT bounce like I used too even off a 10hh pony  I swear the little $hit was grinning at me as he sniffed my pockets, no doubt to see if any treats had fallen out!

Question is what do I try next? I cant have the little girl falling off every ride

Vodka and redbull for anyone who got this far  xx

Me neither, but must admit your post made me smile. At 10hh is it more a case of climbing up from, rather than falling off from ;)

Being serious though, hope you get to the bottom of it and sort it out.

I know :( I got back on right away though to restore my confidence haha!

I was more frightened of him rearing over on top of me, he may be small but he's heavy!

I may try hacking him out tomorrow and see what his reactions are like.... may have someone following incase I fall off again! My 3 year old daughter has less trouble than I do!!

It's okay, our shetland has had me out the sidedoor a number of times - they are, by nature, very cheeky so it takes a while to curb their enthusiasm for being a little turd.....

My only thought is; 'he has lost quite a bit of weight since we got him' would make me check his saddle fits properly. Could it be pinching/sitting awkwardly on his new found ribs?!

Good luck :)

Nikki,

This has also been checked. This pony has been checked for everything... I have had a few strange looks from fellow liveries in the past month because I am investigating every possible route of pain and uncomfortable-ness (is that a word?) People ask, oh he's just a Shetland why are you bothering?

He was ridden in a treeless by me and a wintec cub by the kids which is perfectly fine my saddler said.

Makes me feel good knowing I'm not the only person to fall off a mini pony although my riding instructor will now insist I have lessons on mini pony as I clearly need them haha

Have you managed to fix this? If not then can I suggest that he is possibly just getting bored of being ridden around a school. I don't really know how you could fix it though :/. The only alternative I am coming up with is maybe some sort of trick training that the little girl could do on him when riding to keep it interesting for him :). Or how about setting up cones and halt boxes and things like that so it keeps him interested :)?

oh dear didnt know if to laugh or laugh! Little monkey. I did wonder the same if he is being schooled to death. Short hack, pole work etc make it more interesting if you are in the school.

If you do school just keep it minimal ie 10-15 mins. Mine hates school but was great hack, sisters horse the same. FAB cross country, liked pole work only in school.

Going round in circles can make them stale. Good luck hope you dont hurt too much.

This was ages ago haha

Pony is back to his cheery self still super cheeky! He gets hacked and loose schooled and also popped over a few jumps which he loves! I just wish I could find a confident light person to make the most if him as he is such a dude!
