Went to local arena hire today. Everything was going ok, but then we added in a jump with a wall filler. One of the jump 4 joy wide, shiny plastic red ones. We've jumped wall fillers before, but the flat, normal ones.
Came into it and she backed off a little so I drove her on, she jumped really big and green, nose between knees style, and scared herself.
I was kicking myself as I had a vibe I should have asked for it to be lowered as a fence and the fillers pulled out to start.
Came round again, she slammed on the brakes and I hit the deck.
So annoyed with myself.
Got back on, jumped some others and then deconstructed the wall fence right down to a tiny straight we could trot over with the wall fillers pulled out, but she was so worried. Eventually build it back up to an oxer with one half of the filler in fully underneath and left it there.
But I'm so upset with myself. So annoyed. It was so unnecessary. I knew what I needed to do, but I didnt listen to myself. And I scared her. :(
I've been in tears over it. Silly I know.

If you just get it right all the time you're not learning, you're sitting in your comfort zone. You asked the question, horse didnt get the answer right, so you broke it down to something she could work out and built on it. You dealt with it well and that's what will stay with your horse

Thank you. That's a good way to look at it. And I have learnt what the original question with a "yes" answer should have been...even if I didnt ask it when I should have.

I don’t think you did a ‘wrong’ thing at all by having a go at the wall filler if she’s been over other fillers before. It didn’t quite go according to plan, but that happens quite a lot with horses doesn’t it! I think the way you then deconstructed the question was spot on and really good horsemanship actually.

Lots of people would have whalloped her for stopping and made her jump it several times, and gone home feeling like a champ!

I know which approach I admire more.

Thank you this is so kind.
I'm actually thinking of hiring the arena again and working on that filler a bit more just to be sure she is ok with it.

You had no reason not to give it a go. It didn't work. You spent time getting that confidence back ,then desteucted the jump and finished on a great note. No harm done. Next time you will know to go in small on this particular jump so you learnt something. Great horsemanship, well done!!
