Today I forgot the power of the word "ho." Red's brakes are like hardware. They are installed and cant be removed unless corrupted. Every now and then I do practice sessions, working out any bugs that may have found their way into her system, brake wise. Its usually very simple, at random points in times I ask her to stop at the walk and trot. Straight line or in a turn/circle. If there is a bug or two they are easily removed and the day goes on knowing all I have to do it say "Ho" and she stops. I can say it loudly or soft as a butterfly and she will stop. Nonverbal cue isn't as perfect but its pretty damn good.
So today I decide to ride in the pasture I moved a few fallen limbs around to get them out of the way and started on my ride. It went easy. I decided to work on her cantering in there which is why i chose to ride in there. We started off walking then trotting then checking her braking system for any bugs and so far they were perfect, stopping from the walk and trot with no issues. We worked going both directions and I started asking her to canter. I go to the left (Im trying to work on her left lead) a few times, then right. I decide to start 2-pointing at the canter, easy peasy. While still cantering along the thought process went through my mind.
"I wonder if she will stop form the canter?"
I learned an important lesson today....
Never ask for the stop from a canter in 2-point.
I would leave it at that, but then you would assume I ate dirt. Not saying I had no problems, but I landed on the side of her neck and Poor Red kind of just walked on going "ummmmm....." Luckily enough I was gripping so hard with my thighs on the saddle I didnt get an impromptu flying lesson.
Consider Lesson Learn.
