I found this utterly shocking...

Poor lad, I saw that last week. What's worse is that apparently now they are showing an OES in the Dulux ads again there has been a huge increase in people enquiring about puppies. Bet many of them have no idea how much work is involved in looking after the breeds coat.:(

Indeed, and in my dog grooming days I saw a few like that every year..plus maggots around the bum as well.Mind,I loved the buzz it gave me to attack it with my Stablemates..no dog clippers can power through matts like them..and there was ..an eye! an ear!The legs often had to be cut downwards as in getting off bandages.Poor devils,so unfair. Often from homes you would never dream would neglect a dog..a vicar for instance "her yearly MOT" he called it,and she was alive with fleas as well.He seemed astonished that I tried to persuade him that maybe twice a year would be better!

I have to say this is very shocking, PP as a pet groomer what would you charge to shear/clip an OES if you dont kind me asking?

This is not a young dog and you have to wonder if he had ever been clipped, groomed in his life. I have to say this isnt a dog I would consider owning maybe because its not black & tan but because of the maintence of its coat.

I do hope he makes a complete recovery and finds a lovely home.

I had one my OH collected very like that+maggots. The car had to be valeted after cos of the stink in it,the grooming room stank too.I rang the owner up who claimed a vet had seen it a day before and said it was in excellent health..and NO he was`nt paying any extra.SO..I said since that was the case..could he kindly remove it ,but to be aware that in 48 hours our local RSPCA inspector would be calling to make sure he had rectified the situation. He paid sixty quid..and the maggots were returned in a blood tube along with a clean skinned dog.I guess nowadays it would be closer to ninety?

A dog like that, in this condition (assuming it stood and didn't need to be sedated like that chap) would be well over £100...it'd be charged by the hour at a rate of £35/hr which is what I'd need to take to cover my shop and staff expenses. I'd also have to have all my blades resharpened (working on a filthy coat sure does blunt them fast!) and probably have my clippers reserviced after.

For an OES in decent nick and just in for routine bath and clip (depending on whether it's a short clip or a scissored teddy) would be anywhere from £65 to £85ish.

They are an expensive breed to have groomed, but if brushed regularly they don't have to come in THAT often.

I did a talk recently about how to reduce the cost of grooming -- buy a brush and use it--- was the theme! :D

It's amazing the things people will say.

My friend recently had someone cancel 3 hrs before an appt because she claimed the vet said the had a breed of dog that shouldn't ever have a bath. She had a lurcher. Groomer-friend rang the vet to see if they in fact said it and if they had, why? She'd never heard such a claim. The vet said the owner would be having an appt with them later that day, but they hadn't seen dog or owner in a year. Claims they never said it. I've had people tell me all sorts of weird and wonderful things that they said the vet told them that are just complete and utter horse *****e.

Disgusting.
I have a westie and live on a farm,so i clip her right out with the horse clippers.Everyone laughs at what she looks like, but id rather be laughed at that have a matted, dirty dog.
She likes nothing more to go up the cow yard or scratch on the tractor tyres!!

Hunting mad...shock horror! Your westie isn't groomed like this:

j/k :)

I don't find it offensive that someone DIY grooms their own farm dogs. The hair cut may not be perfect, but at least the hair is attended to! The chap in the photo above is a city dog that just hadn't been professionally groomed in like three years (but had been DIY'd). So it could have been MUCH worse. Farmer next door has two border collies who I don't think have ever seen a brush or bath ever. But at least they aren't ever like the OES in the article!

poor old dog
i am extremely short of money but would never allow my bedlington to get in such a state - i have used sissors to clip - not pretty but it kept him comfy & then shopped around for a 2nd hand pair of dog clippers - we may not get a proffesional clip look but he is mat free & clean:)
