Hi I just had the vet today to do a routine flu jab for my 2 yr old and whilst she was there I asked her to take a look at my youngsters belly button as it sticks out a bit and when pressed you can put your fingers in. The vet says I must have an operation done to correct the problem. Can anyone tell me of their experiences and where they had the operation done? I would like it done at the yard but the vet wants me to take her to his clinic have the op and stay for 3 days. Once she is home she can only stay in the box and walk in hand. Form previous experiences where she has had to stay in her box she has not liked it at all. I have heard of this operation being carried out on owners yards can this still be done? Thanks in advance.

My boy was born with an umbilical hernia which didn't bother him and I didn't show so we waited until he had grown up a tad and when he was two he had his knackers chopped off (poor love!) and whilst under anaesthetic they sewed his tum up too, it didn't take long with two vets and all done in the field, good luck but don't worry.
Oh and he stayed out (as it was dry and no flies) as they wanted him to walk off the swelling etc from his castration.

my cobs got a one finger umbilical hernia, which the vet missed when i had him vetted... but thats another story... ive been told it should not need surgery and it shouldnt pose any problems... im doubtful but at the moment he's ok. He's a two year old gypsy cob. How many fingers can the vet get in as i was told anything up to 2 doesnt need treatment as the whole isnt big enough for gut to come through just fat which is whats happened to my lad... iu can push it about and get rid of it but comes back after 10 mins! Good Luck and keep us posted, thanks Jo

Thank you all for your comments. I am In Germany at the moment and the vets like to operate on everything at the clinic but she is only two and I want to reduces the stress as much a possible. I will wait until I move back to the UK in a few months were my local vet will carryout the surgery at home and she can have proper turnout.
