I've been on the lookout for a horse now for about 4 years on and off. I thought I'd found a lovely dales a few years ago but he turned into a rodeo horse every time you rode him so he went back to his owners. Then I part loaned a gelding on my yard for a while, then started looking after my friends daughters green 7 year old (schooling him and hacking him to give him some experience). I gave up horses for a bit. Then me and my mates moved yards and I found Fearn who I took on loan, but she became agressive to horses and people so she also went back to her owner.

I've been looking for a few weeks now but have not been successful at all - the horses are either to big or have already been snapped up

I've been offered a couple that have been unsuitable - 1 was a just broken 3 year old and the other was a 20 year old. I thought I'd found a lovely horse for full loan - he was a good size and age. He'd been off work for a year as his owner works long hours (12 hours) and doesn't had time to ride him but then a day before I was due to go and see him I got an email off his owner to say she had changed her mind about loaning him as it would be to upsetting for her.

I'm starting to give up hope that I'll ever find a loan horse, I know not many people loan their horses due to bad experiences etc but there must be someone out there.

I wish I could afford to buy but I really can't at the moment

Does anyone have any suggestions of where else I could look or what else I could do??

Could you try sharing a horse (although this would probably be hard to find too!) Word of mouth? Ask local farriers (they tend to know a lot about what's going on!). Have you tried putting a wanted ad up in a tackshop or online?
 
Have put wanted ads up on the net, in the bargain pages and in the local tack shop. I've also asked the farriers (3 of them) and the horse transporters in the area.

I asked the local feed merchant to and may go up there on sunday to put an ad up on their board.

The shares seem to be very far and few between in this area

Why was the 20yr old you were offered unsuitable?

You say in your siggy you dont mind taking an older horse wanting an easier life.

While there are some VERY VERY good loan horses out there, a lot of loan horses are up for loan for a reason, whether it be age, behaviour, they need schooling etc, so you will find the fab ones, where perhaps the owner cant afford upkeep or doesnt have time, will go straight away.

Have you been putting ads up etc and putting word around your area?

Both my boys started off as loan horses, there are good ones out there, its just finding them before someone else does!
 
He was only 13.2 and with his age I didn't want to put more pressure on his joints as my friend wouldve been exercising him when I was away.

I've put up ads at the local tack shop, in the local free ads and bargain pages and on the internet. I've also asked the local feed merchants and farriers
 
Oh dear, sorry not to be of more help! I have had a couple of loan horses but they have always come through a trainer, and have been with problems. Although with a lot of understanding and patience they have been wonderful partners.
