So dropped poor old horse off last night at vets for his op today - tooth extraction and flushing sinuses.

Vet rings me about 11.30, I am expecting to hear how the op went so to my surprise... Vet says to begin with they checked in his mouth and his teeth looked really healthy and strong and not loose at all, so instead of going straight in and taking his tooth out they would look in his sinuses.

So they get to his sinuses and FIND... that he has a really bad fungal infection - apparently fungal infections in the sinuses is very rare and with tooth infection is also very rare. They said that it appears to have been there a long time as the infection has eroded a hole through his sinus wall and that is why the discharge had been draining so well through his nostril.

So they have flushed his sinuses and plan to do that for the next 10 days to clear the fungal infection and are not removing any teeth YET! They want to clear it up and see what happens - tomorrow they are going to scope and also check his guttural pouch.

The vet said that shes not saying he will not need a tooth removed as the CT scan showed changes in the roots however, clearing his fungal infection is their main priority. What I can gather is that they are going to flush and clear it for the next 10 days send him home for me to monitor over the next few weeks and see if it comes back! Brilliant!

So any words of wisdom. I am completely flummoxed!:(

Hi thanks for replies they did not say the time of fungal infection they just said it was bad and very rare! Bloody typical luck at the moment!

I remember my friends horse had a fungal infection of the gutteral pouch. It didn't end terribly well I am glad your vet is checking.
