Grrr! I would have to go and be ill so I can't take my horse to the one show this year I actually have transport to! Fed up of schooling for what seems like nothing. Dressage, fine - going to do the Interdressage thingy as soon as I'm allowed back on my horse, but jumping? It feels like there's no point because although it's fun at home, my horse hasn't ever been able to get to shows regularly enough to get out and see different types of jump, and we don't have enough jumps at home to practice a proper course with spreads etc.

So I am determined to get a tow car and a trailer. It'll just be used to tow, and if it's really icy in the winter and it wouldn't be safe to cycle to work. Question is - buy now, with less money (prob about £1200 for each), or wait 'till next summer and just give up for this year. I feel like I've waited so many years already - but equally don't want to spend too little and have problems. Is about £2400 for car and trailer ok?

If you can save some more money towards them both by next spring, then I would wait.

However, by buying now you will be able to get out and about all winter too - there are loads of things on during the winter nowadays.

If you shop carefully £2400 should be ok. Take time to look around and research what type of car to get before you get a trailer. Don't forget to check kerb weights and laden weights etc. You are obiviously going to be getting a 2nd hand trailer so get it fully serviced and checked over before you use it.

You should be able to pick up a 4X4 at a reasonable price at the moment as, due to high fuel prices & Car Tax going up, they are reletively cheap. Beware of cheap trailers as you may find rust & rotting floors. You should get a safe trailer for around £1000 leaving you around £1400 for the 4X4. It wouldn't be very new but you should get a reasonable older model. You must realise though that spares & repairs on 4x4s can be expensive so put some money away each week just in case.

I bought my 4x4 off ebay 3 years ago & it's fine & my trailer I bought off Horsemart, again a brilliant buy.

I read on the interdressage site that you can do the style and performance tests which include some jumping if that's of interest to you?

I, like you, have no transport but luckily we are reasonably close (about 40 minutes hack) from a local RS that does XC and jumping nights otherwise I'd have nothing!

Had a chat with OH and convinced him that he wanted transport too (his horse is a pain in traffic and sort of pushed the idea of going places so there'd be no roadwork). After we've moved house this autumn we're going to get a loan and get a new renault master conversion. They're only about £10000 and he'd be happy driving it whereas was less sure about a trailer
