I am so annoyed at the moment, the plan was to go for a little hack yesterday with a friend so I brought in the 5yo ex racer, tied her up, groomed her, put saddle on her......and she blew up! Boom! Bronced the saddle off, broke the baler twine (on the ring, not holding tack together!) and galloped off down the fenced off strip. Stopped at the end, happy as larry grazed a bit til I collected her. Now, she's in season and can be a bit girthy at the best of times so I gave her the benefit of the doubt and turned her out again.

Then I brought in the 6yo mare who had freaked out the other day with her leg over the rope and bolted, ending up with rope burns. She had some time off with just ground work to teach her that headcollars and ropes are NOT scary and I am NOT trying to kill her, that had gone well so I caught her, tied her up, put saddle on, so far so good. Then I came at her with the bridle... that, of course, was the most frightening thing I could have done to her so she immediately broke free (wearing headcollar around her neck) with saddle on. She galloped down the strip and barged her way through the gate at the bottom into the sheep field (very small area with no sheep in it), then jumped the 3'6" sheep wire and barbed wire fence (I know, but it's a rented field) in with her buddies, galloped around the field for a bit with them and then- for no apparent reason- decided to jump back into the sheep field over the barbed wire. Stupid horse. As she was still alive and undamaged, she then decided that she should probably jump a different fence so jumped the wire NEXT TO THE OPEN GATE, didn't make it, tripped and fell on her side. She then stopped and I watched her limp and circle like she had broken at least one leg. I got there and managed to get a hand on her, remove the saddle and put headcollar on her properly. I led her up to the round pen, she walked sound and then trotted around in there sound (although bleeding from most of her legs). I called the vet because she wouldn't weight bear when she stood still.

Vet arrived, I had difficulty catching her in the 20meter pen! Asked if she had a sedative dart gun? She did not... Anyway, after about 3 doses of sedative she had 2 wounds stapled and the rest cleaned up, no major harm done. Asked nice Vet lady to look at Eric as he had been kicked on Sunday and has swollen area and what I assumed was a graze above his left knee. She sedated him, cleaned the "graze" and found a wound down to the bone! OMG, I felt awful. I had just left him to it as he hadn't seemed lame and it looked like the graze was healing ok. Anyway, nice vet lady said that she couldn't feel any bone damage but that if he was lame in 3 weeks she would xray. It means that if he is sound tomorrow morning without meds he can go to RC camp at the weekend but if he's not sound he cannot be ridden at all!

Oscar, the old boy is quite sore after working hard at the weekend so he's out of action, Eric has a potentially broken leg, Madison has legs like a kebab thingy and Miss Dynamite can't have a saddle on! What is going on? I think someone who can look after horses properly without breaking them should come and take them all away while I curl up in a corner, rock myself and write poetry.

If anyone wants a broken horse please come to my field and take one. Also please bring me some chocolate, wine and sympathy.

*Rocks gently and humms*

sounds like your not having the best of times.
ive got 3 horses stuggled to kep um all so i loaned one out. My other two, one being a rescue lame typical and my other might have a stifle problem.
Just what i need got 2 horses costing me a fortune that cant be ridden either

You don't mean it, you love them really and be lost without them....although it does us good to have a good grumble with their a pain in the bum.

M&S Walnut cake do ya?:D

I know, seriously what would I do with all my time and money?? Walnut cake would do at a pinch but you'd have to pick the walnuts off :D

*Moves slightly out of the corner, still rocking*

Crikey!
Take that M&S Walnut Cake, let yourself rock for a little while then pick yourself back up and realise it cant get any worse. . . surely?!
Hope things pick up for you soon!

I'll send you a Nigella Lawson choccy mousse as soon as it is cool enough... that's really gonna sort you out.
You want????

To be honest, I think that you are better off staying in the corner and rocking... and if people are giving you cake, I'll come and join you...

I have a couple of horses, one with feet that fall apart in the summer if I ride him too much, or if the ground dries out - and my youngster who is known as the crash test dummy. I want him sponspored by vetwrap and animalintex, simply because of the amount I have gone through since I had him. I am sure that he knows when I might have a month coming up without any enormous bills due, so he decides to create another one for me. I am so popular with my vets that I get Christmas cards from them... I am waiting for the postcards from them, as I am sure that I have paid for quite a few of their exotic holidays by now...

Anyway, we have an outing on Tuesday... to the vets for xrays....

I feel for you Rosie *as I munch on cake and choccie mousse* is your youngster a tb by any chance? I'm off to see the little feckers in a minute and I will report back soon. I am getting my (?brave/stupid/mental?) friend to have a go on the bucker (yes, bucker) to see if it wears off after a little while......

And thanks Canteron- I'm glad my sad and suffering full life has made someone happy!!! ;)

Funnily enough, he is!

One thing I have learned since having him is that the perfect thing to go with cake and chocolate is shed loads of alcohol....

Assuming I can afford it after paying the b****y vet bills....

I hope your little cherubs are all fine when you check them. They must know that you are due a bit of good luck, surely???

Hahaha, I may have commented on that anyway- I agree, they are stupid, worthless, accident prone, brainless spanners. But they do look pretty (when they're not carved up) and they do the job so hey-ho!

Well Ester, I did consider that. One doesn't want a saddle and one doesn't want a bridle so I came up with ingenious ways of gaffer taping them together and sitting on one while steering the other and hoping the tape stayed on. If anyone has any other ideas on this or would like to patent the construction of such a device then please feel free.

Update!!

Good news and bad news- Took the stupid 5yo to the round pen earlier to have a proper check of her back to see if she's uncomfortable or just a little s*** and she didn't mind having the saddle on, threw on arbitrary young chap who sat a few halfhearted bucks and kicked her on and she behaved beautifully thereafter!

Eric on the other hand was very sorry for himself, his wound had seeped all down his leg and the forearm was very hot and swollen. I cleaned him up, lavaged the hole and packed it with intrasite type gel and dressed it. It's in a funny place above the knee so I added a tiny bit of gaffer tape (my best friend) to hold it on. We will see tomorrow. He also doesn't like the antibiotic in his feed so I am going to pick up an injectable tomorrow. He is very lame so no way he's going to RC camp tomorrow! Poor boy (and how damn selfish of him!!)

Stupid 6yo mare was in better nick- she's not lame on her ridiculous looking limbs but would not let me clean them or apply fly repellant so they are going to take longer to heal than I would have hoped although she's on bute so she may feel better about it tomorrow. I hope they don't scar, she's really quite fugly enough without big scars!

Oscar is also feeling a little better. Phew, now all I need is some stickability for the small stupid one.

Pictures if you feel up to it but not after dinner/cake/wine as may be a bit ick.

I'm back to rocking now but I have been loaned a horse for the weekend so am grateful really :(

your post was just like How I feel,.
my mare (alhough have 7 horses) who supposed to be competiting at weekend has decided to be lame, totally inconvenient.. so wanted to compete...only one who I have been intensively schooling to compete, (could have ridden one of the others...but now to short notice to get ready......... And I have 7 ,, but now not one to compete at weekend..I give up too !!!!, I will share the cake with you please ...

*Passes last slice to Tamba* I feel for you, he's the only one I would have really enjoyed riding at the weekend but was kinda resigned to riding the mare before the barbed wire incident. Now I don't get any!! Boo....

Will you take an unschooled one instead?

These sorts of things are why I seriously dislike the practice of tacking a horse outside of its stable, although I know that some become awkward in the stable.
