I Hate My Horses Name.....

A friend of mine had a cob called BJ and after a lot of sniggering behind her back from the girls at her yard...... someone had to explain to her what it meant......Bless her.....she changed it Bee!!!!!!!!!

I bought my horse at 10 months old her stable name was Daisy full name Heulfora Upsie Daisie I changed her name to Dwynwen because I wanted a nice welsh name. Haven't changed the passport as not allowed but so far touch would no bad luck.

I also knew a chestnut gelding called Red who was a nightmare very bad tempered and uncontrollable, they changed his name to Humphrey and he turned into a complete gentleman almost overnight haha!

I have never changed a name but my mare started her life out as a Kelly and her previous owner changed it to Kelsey, which I'm pleased about, as being called Kerrie, people often mistake me for a Kelly, so I'm not the biggest fan the name haha.

Also my Shetland is called Jeremy, and I call him JJ or J or J Bizzal, coz he thinks he's a gangsta haha, but never really gets called Jeremy.

Sam is Sam or baby boy.

My horse didn't have a name when I had him at seven. He may have been called by his passported name of USA (pronounced Ooh Sir or You Sir) abroad before he was imported but I wanted a nice dutch name for him. I was going to call him Hanz but I had tried out a horse a week before called that who turned out to be a dreadful horse, so didn't feel inclined to give him the same name.

Not sure how I settled on Bailey, I haven't actually had anyone ask me if he is Irish, I suppose its evident that he isn't really! And I am quite partial to a drop of the old Baileys in coffee, lol

I also had a horse called Biggles, but it did really suit him, as he too was a refined old gentleman who used to fly everywhere!

My last horse was called Romulus VH Dancorhof and his stable name was Rommy which I didn't like to start with but then got used to it.

yep recently one arrived called Chelsea, and just couldn't leave it as that...

I used to be superstitious but now i'd just change it to something that suits the horse.

I've also the wimpiest, finest boned, injury bound tb called Rambo. Whoever named him must have been having an absolute laugh!

I have changed the stable name of my last two horses. My gelding was called Sprite and I hated it. He looked like an Alfie and so that is what I called him. Didn't end up very lucky though as he had kissing spine and a multitude of other issues. I changed the stable name of my current mare too. Hopefully it won't be too unlucky! I like proper human names for animals, not spot or thunder etc.

I've heard that too. My pony is called Pinto. He's a piebald Welsh X, I think the name is unimaginative and a bit boring. However, now I've got used to it it does suit him. I'm not sure I have the heart to change his name, despite not liking it.

yup changed 2 of my horses and named another!

one went from luke to freddie, the other from aaron to arnie/bear and new pony had no name at age 4 so is called beanz!

.....but....never changed it, as believed it to be unlucky!

Would you agree?

Have you changed your horses name and why?

Just wondered :)

I completely disagree! My current mare was called Daisy, I renamed her Orca (because she's black, white and enormous), because I prefer (preferably inventive) 'non-human' names for animals and because the best horse I ever had was renamed on arrival. So, I see renaming as lucky, if anything and the herald of a fresh start

Changed most of the names of our horses and never had a bit of bad luck with the changed names. In fact more good luck with the change ones and bad luck with the ones we didn't change.

I would always change a name I didn't like.

I've been lucky - ll mine have come with nice names. Alf was called Mr A at the yard I bought him from, which I wasnt keen on, so started calling him Alf, as his original BD registered name was Alf-Resco. Turned out that his original owner called him Alf too, so I hadn't actually changed it.

Yep changed mine from Jacko to Jack cos I hated it... not a drastic change lol

Oh I have done that lots of times. Sometimes because I didn't like a name, sometimes because I felt it just didn't suit.

I don't take any notice of that old wives tale about it being unlucky, luck, good or bad, is merely coincidental.

My mares just go by part of their names, which are Spanish, Estrella is just plain Estrella (Estray-a) but the translation is Star, and if she had been called that it would have been changed pronto. Elegante has become Ella ( not Aya though)

I don't like my horses name (stable or registered) but I just left it. I have a shortened version of her stable name which I and everyone I know now calls her :)

I haven't changed Ned's name, even though I dislike the name! Had a bought him, then it would have been changed before he'd even walked off the lorry! But I knew him for so many years before he became my horse, that he is simply NED!

I prefer Fantasy names for animals, something out of Lord of the Rings or similar! Either that, or a name that means something in another language (Farasi - horse in Swahili, for example) but with an Annie, Holly, Chilli and Ned, I haven't actually achieved my goal! Fingers crossed for the next pet!

I've been able to name 3 of my own but I have picked rather appalling names. I have Oreo, Kenny and Woody. Not particularly imaginative but they suit them.

Oreo's passported name is Tunsteads Dunkable Oreo and Woody's is Lest We Forget - he was passported on 11/11

Our WB was nicknamed "Slimey" when he was born as he got goo over the breeders PJs He was then called "Sli" until they sold him aged 8. When we bought him several months later he was "Stan". This name absolutely suits him.

I changed my boy's name as his name when he came to me was just too normal a human name and I have a few friends with the same name. I love old fashioned, bordering on comedy human names for animals - the problem is, when I named my boy and my dog there were no kids with those names but now, they're everywhere! My boy was Andy, now Archie. My dog is Mabel. I'm thinking of Ralph, Derek or Norman for the next one so no doubt they'll be fashionable for kids in about 7 years time. Any female dog will be Maude or Gertrude.

The only others whose names I've had a part in are GG's Bert and Ernie and their late big brother Fred. I helped to rehome them with her and while I was involved, I referred to them as Bert and Ernie (and their older siblings as Fred and Ginger) although their owner didn't. When GG asked about their names and I told her, she loved them so they stuck.

My friend's horse was called Angelo, she couldn't hear it without imagining a male stripper so that had to change. He's now Amigo.

Never changed any of ours. No need to really. I always knew Jeff as that, from Jefertiti, Kyle - Of Lochalsh, Gray - Mountain etc.

Yes I do give them silly names such as The Hocamaffe for Jeff and The Mountain Goat for Gray but essentially they stay the same.

My big piebald cob mare came with the name Dobbin and I kept it. Didn't seem at all odd to me but other people seemed to find it hilarious and some assumed she was a gelding for some reason.

Banner came without a name, her passported name was Misty Dawn's Mitzy but I did not at all like Misty or Mitzy. Banner just suited her and stuck immediately.

My gelding is called Taz. I'm not keen on it and everyone asks what its short for, but that's the name on his passport and who he answers to so I won't change it.

I've heard of the bad luck thing, that's superstitious rubbish, right? I changed the name of my horse (from a daft one to a much nicer one) and cue three years of veterinary involvement, culminating in what was probably my best ever horse being pts.

I'll not change a name again.
