I hate trying horses when I am looking to buy one....

Went to try the skewbald I mentioned yesterday this morning. He went really nicely for his owner, popped his fences beautifully etc. I got on and rode like a sack of spuds, poor horse ididnt know what to do with me. He and I just did not click, and I could have died with embarrassment

Why do I have to be such a crap rider when I enjoy it so much? I am now frightened of trying any other horses cos I am sure all the owners will be thinking 'FFS what on earth is she riding like'

Hes not exactly the most agile horse in the world, but he whipped round and dumped me!
I hate riding other peoples horses under presure, mean your bound to ride like poo! Just means hes obviously not the horse for you. So get back looking!!

I totally understand where you are coming from. I hate it so much I am actually thinking of trying to avoid it altogether - not wise, I know!

I'm sure you weren't even half as bad as you think, but maybe when you find the "right" horse you won't have that same feeling? If you're anything like me, you only worry about the things you are really bothered about. It's daft I know...if anyone has a cure for this I would be most interested!

Im sure you didn't ride as badly as you think, I feel terrible most of the time, but as yet no one has told me to get off the horse and never venture with 100ft of an equine again (as they rightly should!)

As you said, you just didnt click. DOnt dwell on it, and enjoy the chance to ride some lovely ponies, you know when you have found the "one"

I think you are right about finding the right one - I remember when I rode Josh (my last horse) in the school for the first time (a lesson not trying him to buy admittedly) I just sat there with a stupid grin on my face saying OMG he is AMAZING!!!!!! The fact I was riding like cr*p didnt seem to matter so much at all, I just loved riding him

Maybe I will go back to the guy who sold me J (who is based at our yard) - at least he has given me loads of lessons so he KNOWS I ride like a sack of spuds

It is clearly so you can go and look at the sensibly priced bay not the overpriced coloured.....

Oh I am so with you on this one, I get queasy just thinking about it. Just to make you feel a bit better, when I was last looking I rode one that I just could not get out of trot. Actually I could barely get it into trot let alone canter! So embarrassing! Another one bucked when I went into canter (should have smelt a rat when owner declined to ride).'Go and try again owner says, he never bucks. But try to get the trot more forward'. Cue me feeling even more crap than usual. So stupidly off I go in a spanking trot this time, ask for canter and horse gives volley of bucks until its come to a standstill. At this point having only stayed in the plate by a miracle I get off. After that though I was so nervy riding the next one I should think the poor owner thought I had never ridden before.
 
I hate trying horses too, I just looked at Billy over the fence - didn't actually sit on him - so much easier.

When you find the right horse you'll feel good on it. The guy on your yard seems to buy a few from here http://www.rumerstud.com so might be worth giving them a call as they are a lot cheaper direct from Caron Nichol.
 
Does he now? Thanks very much indeed for the tip DD, it is much appreciated - I do like and respect him a lot, but then who wants to pay the middle man if you dont need to I suppose

I didn't like doing it either, I thought it was going to be really exciting but it was just one disappointment after another, not to mention total embaressment with the one I fell off and broke my finger and nose and bled all over the owners beige jods!!

That is SO out of order of the owner whose horse bucked! Mind you I am too cynical, if the owner wont ride it I wont even bother trying it I just walk away

Ouch that sounds so painful! I just hate feeling like a numpty riding in front of owners who are all looking at me like 'what the hell does she think she is doing'

i had someone come and try my cob today, she watched someone ride him then got on him herself, as i know it can be nervous when you get on a strange horse, i watched her for a couple of minutes(just to make sure she was ok on him) i then went out of sight so she wouldn't feel uncomfortable riding him, she loved him,fingers crossed she is going to let me know later, (had another to look at)

Like Landyandy the seller of my new horse showed my him being ridden then only hung around long enough to make sure I was safe before leaving me to plod around. I probably rode like a plonker but I think if you ride badly and the horse still goes well/behaves that's a good sign.

I'd never ever try a horse unless I'd seen it ridden before hand. It's a firm rule with me since a friend broke her leg when trying a lunatic horse which the seller said was fine but she claimed she couldn't show it herself because she had a bad back that day !

TBH I never got as far as bothering to ask about the price! It was just so obviously not suited to me that I did about 15 mins walk/trot/canter and said 'thanks but no thanks' - the owner was lovely, offered to give me some hints and tips to get him going better etc, but he just didnt give me the same feel which my last horse did

She (the owner) was very nice and understood completely.
 
When we were looking for my son I could tell whether he liked a horse from the way he rode. On horses he didn't like he rode like a complete novice, I'm sure people thought i had been lying about what he had been doing for the last 7 years. On horses he liked he did ride like he had been doing it for years.

That is reassuring at least...I felt like someone who has had a couple of lessons at a riding school, not someone who has supposedly been riding for 17 years

I drove for 2 hours to see a horse for loan with my OH, and got a proper migrane on the way up. I decided that despite not being able to see properly and wanting to puke, that having driven for so long and getting these people to wait around for us on a sunday, I should try and ride - they rode it in spurs and I rode it like a sack of crap, without spurs and couldnt co-ordinate myself, let alone get the horse to do what I wanted - went the 2 hour drive home feeling like shite, very embarrased at such a feeble attempt at riding, but not suprised when they said that they didnt think I was the right person for him!! I wouldn't have given him to me either!!
 
But at least you had a valid reason with your migraine BexandSpooky - I just rode like crap for the hell of it or something!
