I have £1.5k to spend on a 4x4 - what would I get

Looking at buying a 4x4 at some point, but realistically, I will only have about £1.5k to spend (bit more might be possible, but not going far so dont want to fork out for an expensive one)

What is worth looking at?
 
old izuzus - we sold ours for 2k - 80k on clock = commercial so cheap tax. beaten up a bit but in perfect working order :) you should be able to get something similar
 
If you want one for towing then a Diahatsu Fourtrak or an Isuzu Trooper.

You can get a P reg Range Rover for that but the running costs are too high (mine is on Ebay at the mo!)

Just type in 4x4 in ebay and set the price max to £1500 and away you go.

If you don't want one for towing then I like the Rav4.
 
Isuzu trooper is your best bet. Still reliable even with a high mileage. Just make sure you check they've had the recall work done on them a few years ago and if you google isuzu trooper owners forum/club then there's heap of useful information on there about them.
 
I bought an S reg Vauxhall Monterey in March, which is an Isuzu Trooper with a Vauxhall badge and made for the British market, in March with 112k on the clock and brand new MOT for £1550. It didn't have any tax but I taxed and insured it for the year and the lot cost me 2k, which isn't bad at all. She's even a lovely metallic cherry red and has been christened Ruby Tuesday :D
I'd go for a Trooper (or Monterey) or a Fourtrack for that price. I really wanted a Land Rover Defender but they cost a bomb because they last. You could go for Discovery but they can be pricey to run.

Really? We have a Disco 1. It's just taken us to Kingsbridge and back from Chester (600 mile round trip) and bumped all round the country lanes round there - no probs at all. Has never let us down once in 18 months (touching loads of wooden things).

And it cost 470 quid. But.... there was the small matter of quite a bit of welding but it's done now.

If you're going to get one get the 200tdi. It's by far the better built one. It's the one with the plastic surrounds on the headlights. Rarer but definitely worth getting one. The landy crowd tend not to scrap them as they are the easiest to work on and have the better reputation.
 
If you can get an old ford maverick it will be a total star for you. We had ours year and it had goodness knows how many million miles on it but always soldiered on. Total warhorse, can't recommend them highly enough!
 
We've just bought (literally just bought, as in last friday) a N Reg Land Rover Discovery 1 300TDI auto. It's a bit battered and bruised with the odd spot of rust, but no leaks, nothing major wrong.
It's quite a thirsty beast but we only use it for dodging about in, pulling the trailer and hubby wanted a "project" to off-road in.
I absolutely love bouncing around in it, and that's saying something, because I didn't think I would after spending the working week in luxury in an brand spanking new Audi A6:D!
 
My '96 7 seater Shogun that pulls 3,300kg with ease!

Actually, it's not available yet, but will be next month and that's the sort of money I was thinking of. It's only being sold because we need a lorry.

I've been very impressed with a Shogun and would buy one again if I needed another 4x4. Have owned most Land/Range Rovers in the past, from newish to oldish and in my opinion, the Shogun is far superior vehicle in this price bracket. Reliable, solid, comfortable and just keeps going. You get the feeling it would get you out of anywhere. Ours was fantastic in the snow and ice this year, never failed to start even when it was left for days on end. Insurance cost £100, so next to nothing. Plus parts are readily available. You still see so many of the old ones on the road which must be a good indicator.

Worth putting a Shogun on your 'to try list'.
