hi i have just bought my horse well its my daughter and she is very thin and needs put weight on {so any help with that also would be great } but i am worried about how long to keep her out in this pouring rain she has a coat on a medium weight but with her being thin im wondering how long to keep her out or if she will be ok to stay out till bout 4 which is when i would norm get her in she is on a well grassed field but i wondering with her being thin will she get cold quicker than a normal weight horse many thanks

If she has a rug on, I wouldn't worry. Good grazing is one of the the most fattening foods she can eat, especially spring grass. It's much better for them to be outside grazing than stuck in a stable. So my vote is to leave her out (with a decent waterproof rug on).

I think that your right to be concerned, not only is it raining heavily here, but it's freezing cold with a bitter wind. I've got a 3 yr old, well covered New Forest filly that has wintered out without a rug & been happy as Larry all winter, who has turned into a shivering wreck this morning. She was so cold she could barely move, i've brought her in fed her, rubbed her down & left her with a big pile of hay.

I've left all the others in for the moment, they will go out for 3-4 hours as soon as it relents a bit.

Perhaps turn your girl out but go & check on her at lunchtime if possible. If she's moving around grazing then she's probably fine, if she's standing hunched in a corner or against the hedge then bring her back in.

Hopefully the weather will improve soon :-)

If well rugged she will be fine, my TB lives out 24/7 and is still grazing in the middle of a rain and wind swept field, but she does have a full neck and thick turnout on. It is very cold, my shetland cross nf seems to feel it most and I have had to up his rugs, 5 degrees is winter weather!

I feed sugar-beet, chaff, baileys NO4 & balancer to my PBA. He does really well on it, baileys no4 is amazing stuff.

Or try calm & condition?

When she comes in, feed her as much hay as she can eat.

If she is desperately miserable then bring her in. If she is grazing and happy then leave her be :)

leave her out if she is happy, obviously if she looks miserable bring her in.

Feed wise, i'd give her ad-lib haylage when in. i feed my poor doer Calm and condition, sugarbeet, and baileys outshine with a large hand full of alfa a oil (just to stop him bolting his feed) I give him 4 average size meals a day.

Yeah definately leave her out but maybe rug a bit more than you normally would. Grass is awesome! My girl is arab.tb too and she can be hard to keep weight on but she's out in all weathers and does so good on grass. I also can't recommend a combination of fast fibre and linseed, highly enough. Its amazing stuff!

If she is well rugged and warm then she should be ok aslog as she seems happy being out. I have left mine in today only because it is just constant rain at the moment and they were lookin rather fed up with the weather.

Just out of couriosity {sp} i was asked to go and have a look at an anglo arab mare for some friends of mine that needed weight putting on her, was she in the alsager area?

I was just being nosey, as this anglo arab { that looked more like a tb} was also 15 years of age, and was in need of some food. and ive noticed she has a SOLD on her advert.
