Hi guys there is a horse on our yard that has been on there for about 4 years and she has had many different people looking after including me whilst my horse had colic then she found what we thought was a permanant loan home only to find that she cant afford her anymore, she has had her for about 1 1/2 years so she got in touch with the owner and she cant have her back and just straight away suggested having her put down as she doesnt want her to be sold on but she doesnt want to sort her a loan home out! I could belive it she has had this pony for years! so there is three of us on the yard that want to try and sort her a loan home but dont want her moving! What would you guys suggested we do advertiser her but do people really want to stay on the current yard she is? she is only 19 safe a bit spooky and marish but nothing nasty! She is a good alrounder needs a bit of schooling etc but defenatley not something that you could justify putting down!

Help guys what should we do we really cant afford to keep her in the longrun!

Thanks

Lizx

Advertise for someone to loan her put to stay at present yard, local people may be interested.

But really if you found the ideal person it would be best to let her move.
There are plenty of other nice yards and people that would lover her and care for her so why restrict yourself?
The horse needs someone soon, do whats best for her.

You may need to compromise to keep her alive. A lot of loaners don't want to stay at the same yard, so you are narrowing the options a bit. If you want to become responsible for her future then you will need to buy her for a token amount don't you think? And then make sure you check and double-check the loan home and visit regularly (and be prepared to take her back if it goes wrong).

It is certainly worth putting in the advert that you prefer the pony to stay at the current yard. Try local tack shops to try to achieve this. It is also worth regiatering on the Your Horse forum as you are allowed to advertise loans/shares on there www.yourhorse.co.uk and also paying to put an ad on www.horsetoloan.com
It is also worth ringing your local pony club DC just incase someone is looking for a pony.

Sorry if i didn't read the post correctly but you don't own the horse it's just a horse which is on your yard?

Might be starting something here, but if the owner doesn't want to sell and no longer wants to loan and can't afford or no longer wants the horse and has made the decision to put it down I'm not sure why you and 2 other people are getting involved in what happens to his horse?

I understand that you have a tie with the horse with looking after it previously but it's not your decision to make.

I know it is controversial but it can be the responsible thing to put a horse to sleep. At the moment with money so tight the last thing any responsible owner would want is the animal being moved from pillar to post over and over, sold off loan or perhaps finally ending up somewhere like spindle's farm or the meat trade.

It may well be that this horse's owner is in fact doing the most responsible and loving thing they can for thier horse. If you can't or don't want to sell you have an absolute responsibility to ensure the horse is cared for. In some circumstances this can mean taking the heartbreaking decision to end its life whilst it is happy and cared for, even if that is earlier than nature might have done.

I agree that the owner is actually being responsible. She will know her mares end, and as it would seem has already been proved, there is no guarantee a loan home will last for long and the mare may be in the same situation again in a year or so.

I don't think it would be fair to put the mare down if you can find her a home. There must be people who would want her as a happy hacker. What about trying preloved or project horses website as a free permanent loan and local riding club websites?

It's all very well wanting a loan home for the horse etc, but the horse is not OP's... So, short of buying said horse, OP, I don't think you should or can do anything to stop it being PTS.
