Hiya everyone,

I had my saddle fitted on Sat and the saddle fitter said, that my girth was no good for my cob. (It's elastic on both ends and has never made a problem to him.) She said they give uneven pressure with the rock and role you get with a cob, his saddle has never rocked or rolled or moved, it was just low and needed reflocking. Now she said that cobs are better in unelasticated girths and to change mine.

So question 1) Is this right are unelasicated girths better than elastic on both sides? (I was always told elasticated was better)

Question 2 is easier to tell you about...

My lad is 6 this year and has gone bum high, question is will he still be growing at 6? (He was'nt bum high in the begining of winter)

Last question (I can remember, I'm sure I had more than 3)

When we go into canter on hacks he does a masive kick out, but only on the first few transisions. Now he has done this before in the school but it was at a new place and he was doing his I'm a stallion impression.

Question 3) Could this be the fact he is bum high, or something else? (Not the grass as it's never changed his behaviour before, and he did it in winter as well when there was no grass)

To help he is fed on a hand full of Happy Hoof, and one section of a small bale of hay a day. He lives out Friday, Sat, Sun and Monday. Tues, Wed and Thurs he's in in the day, then out at night.

If you got this far then, have yourself a choccy brake!!:D Thanks

I don't know myself but I have seen a fair few threads on here where people have mentioned that unelasticated girths are better.

My Highland had a growth spurt around 6-7 years, so I'd say yes to this one.

Hmmm, not sure, does he do this in the school at the moment as well? Is it every hack? Have you noticed if it's when he's in during the day T,W and TH? If it's during this time, then could be built-up energy?

I'm sure others with more knowledge will be able to help you better :)

question 1 i think that being elastic on both sides is better than just on one everyone has a different opinion so maybe ask a different saddle fitter not everyone is right !!!as long as the saddle fits correctly

question2 my horse grew moer when we muscled him up and he was 7 or 8!! i think they are like children and some are diferant to others !!

question 3 might be worth getting his back checked and get your back person t look at the saddle as they are quite competant in this area and maybe get them to watch you ride so they can see what the problem is as he might just be a bit sore on one side or a bit stiff . does he do this when out on a hack in a straight line?? hope this helps a little also as they grow they change shape so maybe see if you can try a differant saddle just to see how he goes x

He doesn't do it in the school as much, just if I remind him I have a whip (or if the other horses are farting about). On hacks he does it 90% of the time and on a straight line. Back lady is booked to come, he looks (words of OH) like he's playing like when the hunt go past and he has a buck and a fart then goes. He also throws his head up just before (He does the same thing when coming to call, throws his head gives a kick out then flat out down the field) and can ponse about on the spot before he canters. If that makes sence.

I was told by the saddler that elasticated on both sides wasn't ideal for my cob but didn't say anything about my one with elastic on one side.

My pony grew up until eight. Stopped at 5 then suddenly shot up again at about 7/8. Expensive growth spurt new rugs tack, everything and meant I could no longer compete in under 14.2hh classes.

On a hack is it all very exciting and could he be rushing getting his legs in a knot and kicking to sort them out. Which could be why he does it when he was in the school. Personally I would go out alone and try slowing, balancing and cantering, and practising these transitions outside the school. Or it might just be really exciting. :D

I really dont like using an elasticated girth on my cob...the saddle moves around too much for my liking! But he is shaped like a barrel and so it can be hard getting the saddle to stay in one place and hes a typical flat backed barrel cob. If you dont seem to be having a problem with the saddle moving stick with the girth you got!
