As the title, i bought my mare in september as a ridden bombproof confidence giver, turns out shes in foal soo what do i need to know?

Any hints/tips? my vet is aware and i have quite experienced breeding friends although i would like to know more myself

What do i need to feed? what time of day should i expect baby? can i still turn her out as normal until baby comes? when can i turn mum and baby out?

Pheww there's millions of questions i need to ask, i think i need a book!

Any suggestions welcom :o

I was in the same position 9 years ago now :) The best piece of advice i was given was basically not to panic. I felt incredibly out of my depth. I actually phoned the Mare and Foal Sanctuary who were absolutely fantastic and gave me huge confidence that this was going to be ok. And they were right. I had a lovely colt (which I still have) and everything went very smoothly. I had no idea of due date and the mare foaled in a field with her 'best mate' mare with her. I got a phonecall in the morning to say there was a foal in the field :)

I was very lucky in that he was actually pretty small (my mare is 14.2 and he's only made 13.2hh) and she had no issues at all.

All the very best - its actually very exciting and having a youngster (who I think i've done pretty well with) was fantastic for teaching me things about horses I'd never have learnt without him. :)

Good Luck :)

Thanks guys

Minxie your reply made me smile..

I hope she doesnt have anything too big she is only 13.3ish and quite fine(probs welshxArab) but i got her from a lady who attends 'traveller auctions' so we literally have no idea what she could be having all we know is he/she is Very lively in mummys tum tum!

Although i wouldnt mind anything so long as ninger is safe :p

In reality do i need to stop riding her(we only plod atm)

When is she due does vet think?? Oh it's very exciting. My girl foaled outside quite easily in june. It was her first and everything went well. read back through as many pages/threads as possible on the breeding section of here...it's a mine of info. best of luck!!

If you would like my foaling books you are welcome, pm me your name and address and if you pay postage you can have them, I have two books, right at this moment can't remember the names...one by Peter Rossdale and another one!

Foal to Full Grown by Janet Lorch is the other one.

Don't panic about the size of the foal - that was my first thought when we found out our 14hh Hackney had had 'fun' with a 16hh TB!! My vet told me that in the equestrian world, it's the mum that decides the size of the foal, not the stallion. She will only carry what she is capable of delivering.

But other than that, i have found this website really helpful in showing you the signs to look for towards the end of her pregnancy... http://www.yellowhouseranch.com/foaling.htm

Good luck and do post piccys of the baby when she has it..

All fine here. Can't remember what I said about companion? (Am losing my mind). Pics this weerk, promise. :-)

Ar! The possible showjupmer companion. Luckily it ran through a fence at the yard where I work and keep Dix, not at home where I keep Piper and Ol.
Took some pics yesterday but they are hideous, will try again.
Thank you!
