Vicious thug. Our cockerel is a nasty piece of work. He has started to attack us if we get within 5 metres of him. Well considering he is completely free range it is pretty difficult to avoid him. He really got me good and proper today from behind. Bastaaaarrd. I can see coq-au-vin on the menu very soon.

Any ideas appreciated on how to stop this menacing behaviour!

Chase him with a broom/fork/shovel/whatever is to hand??

I found a broom used to do the job quite nicely when we had a few particularly annoying ones on the yard!

Oooh, I don't envy you, the one at my last yard was pure evil. He used to chase me, and corner me in a stable! I even threw rugs at him to scare him off, but he just ripped them up and attacked them! But yeah, a good sharp stab with a pitchfork usually does the trick.

Feed him!! We have a free range cockerel and duck here and they both spend most their time by my stables as it is sunny and quieter than the front yard. Whenever a feed bin rattles however they descend on me. I now leave them a scoop of their feed in the corner and they leave me alone!! I do secretly like them both though...

Try having a horse attacking you from behind....then you know when you've got serious problems lol!

....different kind of attacking though.

You need to dominate him, when he comes at you, catch him (throw a coat over or whatever) then carry him around under your arm. He will learn that you are top dog, not him. You can also do what he would do to a hen- tread him. Put pressure on him back until he squats, and hold him there.

If he still tries it on then he will never be trained and you would be better off eating him or penning him up.

We had a cockerel like this a few years ago, my dad thought it was funny that me and mum were scared of the dam thing. It was a nasty little sh!t, would creap up on you and run at you with it's claws out. The last straw was went it ran at my dad and hit him in the back of the neck. Needless to say the cockerel didnt see another day, in fact he was on he way to party with the gods a few seconds later!

PMSL. Sorry to laugh at you but the stories on HHO are so funny sometimes. I had a cockeral that did that, especially if you wore a skirt or carried anything in your hands. Cant offer any advice, im laughing too much

Jumping whip with a carrier bag tied to the end. Thwack thwack thwack on the ground, follow him thwack thwack thwack on your leg until you have him in the corner (not actually hitting him) - scares the *hit out of them without actually touching them.
Works in the home as well, on members of the family .

Also worked on a ram who thought it was funny to toss me up in the air (note: very strong ram)

When we are at livery the YO had a game cock which we always called Attilla, he was an absolute menace. He was frightened of the horses so when you set off to lead a horse to a field you were fine but he would lie in wait for you on the way back. We started to leave a lunge whip just outside his 'territory', waving that at him seemed to work.

To be honest think it is time he became dinner

ours got like this over Christmas and after he went for my face (bent down to pick something up) he was locked up for a few days then taken for a walk...and came back as dinner

Tried everything before this, but he got rather sly and crept up on you. He even attacked the farrier!

Grab hold of it, give it a good shake and hold it in a bucket of water, then chuck it across the yard.....it will respect you then

Or if you vant get hold of it, give it a bloody good wack with a shovel so it goes flying across the yard

Well, Sid (the cockerel in question, named after sid vicious) is still strutting his stuff. He is only a young bird, and very handsome. The thing is, he is huge! He came for me again but this time I belted him with a leather headcoller with all my might. How his head stayed on I do not know, but he still came at me again. The second time I got him he backed off. I feel so guilty. I really do not want to hurt him but he hates me. He did slink off and sulk under the lorry for a couple of hours so I must of hurt him. Tonight he avoided me so I am hopeful that he will leave me alone. This is him:
So.... do I give him another chance? I really do not want to kill such a handsome bird. Any ideas?

As with any animal (or bird!) he needs training! I liked the idea of a bag on a stick waved at him. He is very handsome.
Dont eat him!

I know what you are saying, I really do not want to hurt this bird! I also have 3 tamworth weaner piglets, they are for meat. Oh dear, I am so NOT a farmer. x

Its true. Unless hes for breeding- is he worth keeping and risking being attacked?

Though please dont do as someone said and knock him across the yard with a shovel

if someone did that to one of my chickens I would wallop them back!

We had a Muscovy drake that would jump on your back and scratch. Hard.

He was a little sweetheart when we got him as a companion for our little girl duck, but once he matured he was a nightmare.

In the end we donated him to a wildlife area where my son worked, and sadly he was killed within a week of moving there, along with his harem.

Very sad.

He's not going to change, and he'd be a lot better off in a nice garlic and honey marinade than being batted about a yard. That's really cruel, humane despatch and subsequent roasting isn't.

You need to dent his pride!! Cockerals will fight to the death- the more yo u give him agression/challenge wise, the more he will fight you back. Y ou need to scoop him up and cuddle him - i am not joking....

We had an enormous wellsummer cock bird who would give you what for, and had all the girls terrified....i grabbed him as he came at me and gave him a good snuggy cuddle session.....as soon as he knew i wasn't scared of him he backed right down and left me alone!!
