After my experience with young horse failing the vetting and woman pressurising me to take him on loan, thanks so much for all your advice (which I went with). I started looking again and the first horse I tried was more than perfect (unless he is doped - got blood samples).

15 hh bay Arab gelding, 8 years. He has done light hacking for the last 4 years (absolutely brilliant on the road) but has hunted and jumped as when broken. He is incredibly gentle and well behaved - the vet was very impressed - and just lovely to ride - responsive and sensitive - just likes a light contact - and fun - loves to go fast but still controllable. I am getting him and his huge rug wardrobe tomorrow.

He is my first horse (I am 44 and have waited all my life - feel a bit like a girl in a pony book).

Very happy and thanks for all your help.
 
As the saying goes, 'All the best things come to one who waits.' Congratulations on the purchase of your Arab. Build a relationship with him and you will have years of pleasure. A word of warning however, Arabitis is incurable! :D
 
Hey! Join the club:D I got my Anglo/Arab (he's in my signature photo), a couple of years ago and like you was in my 40's. You'll have super fun - I go riding with my daughter who's now 11 (she's 5ft4 already). It's like a dream come true. You'll enjoy horse shopping too.
 
Congratulations , really exciting great weather for a new horse too. Yes agree with other posters love going to the horse shops! Lucky horse

Thanks, I am now going to have a sleepless night of excitement. That's also what my 7 y o daughter said and a minute later when I went to tuck her in she was fast asleep.

Very sweet actually because both my daughters - 4 y o and 7 y o are very excited too!

And I will post some pictures definitely
 
best of luck to you! Got my first horse 2 years ago at the age of 42.... had to wait 30yrs! Loads of patience was needed to get him settled but he is so worth the work we put into him... Hope you have a lovely summer and it sounds like your new horse has landed on his hooves! :-)
 
Congratulations. I waited a lot of years to get my first horse too :D But I bought a fresh from weaning foal when I was 45 :p :D I now appear to have 2 horses :o Ooops how did that happen :p So beware you may find yourself buying more :D


Can't wait to see pics of your horse :D

Congratulations! He sounds lovely. Sounds just like my boy, apart from the hunting! I got Fred as an 8 year old back in 2000, he'll be 20 in a couple of weeks. We've had nearly 11 years together with many good times and I would never even dream of parting with him!

Hope you have a long and very happy life together :D
 
I waited until 36 for my first horse and boy was he worth the wait!! 7 years on and he's still a constant source of pleasure, I smile every single time I see him and I still pinch myself that he's mine!!

Enjoy and pictures are a must!
