Hi all,

I have just doused my horse in Hydrophane Farmyard Louse powder, the stuff in the blue container.

It says on the container not to breathe in the dust, but this is nearly impossible! I have just come in the house now and I feel like my nose and lungs are on fire! Has anyone experienced this before please, or do I need to ring out of hours GP?

I've had a drink of water, but now my throat feels like its on fire, and ive made it worse.

Will this wear off, or do I need to panic? Sorry for dumb question, but its quite frightening! Help!

The active ingredient is P-Menthane-3,8-diol, it's a natural derivative from the eucalyptus tree, so I don't think you have too much to worry about. It's worth ringing the GP though, but the product has been deemed safe for general use by the general public be the H&S Executive, so can't be that poisonous.

Louse powder shouldn't cause this reaction (hell, it's pretty useless at killing lice and inhalation of it has been tested on rats - as well as humans!) BUT if your symptoms persist you SHOULD see your doctor because you may be allergic to the compounds in it.

For future reference, Coopers Fly Repellent Plus is FAR more effective against lice in horses - and FAR easier to apply!
