I have read many many books on handling, breaking, training horses from Mark Rashid, Elaine Heney to Sarah Weston and Richard Maxwell. I find them all interesting and feel that they all have some great practical hints and also has helped me think a lot about how i have behaved around horses.

I dont have my own horse now so cannot practice these techniques but really really want to have a go!! I have also wanted to learn how to correctly long line for years.

There are horsemanship courses out there but most you need to take a horse with you...do i have any chance at all of 'having a go'?

You'll never know until you try :) I'm going to have a bit of an experiment with ASBO cob to see if I can convince him that Philippe Karl knows what's best for him. Just need to get the book back from my RI so I can do the in hand exercises correctly. I reckon there is a neat little dressage diva hidden deep beneath his chunky coblet frame :D

its a shame you aren't closer!

I would happily let anyone loose to do inhand stuff with my tb.

And wouldn't mind teaching you to long rein, he is a saint!

I really feel for you...read up loads about all sorts of things you could do with your horses when I was at the RS and got really fustrated that I couldn't actually try them out!
Keep looking at horsemanship courses...not sure what floats your boat but Hannah Dawson who is a clicker training pro does courses up in Yorkshire where you can use her horses I think.

Long time no see CB.. you might recognize my avatar ;)
I read the Perfect partners/manners books, and managed to intergrate what I read into my daily routine with my boy Shadow, worked very well :)

Finacially, i am not able to have a horse at the moment so i am in a catch 22 i would like to further my experience of groundwork, long lining, handling, breaking and dealing with horse issues such as loading for when i am able to have a horse again but no way of doing it.

I thought there might be a horsemanship type riding school out there that can teach leassons in ground work but i am yet to find one!

I bet there is a small local rescue that you could help out and build your horsemanship skills. The local rescue that I volunteer at could always do with people to support the abused or wild ponies in and adopt a natural or thoughtful approach to starting them from the ground. You can learn lots by watching courses as well. I learnt a great deal watching Mark Rashid for 3 days last spring, so maybe see what small rescues you have locally and see if you could do some taming/handling/ground starting help for them.

Are there any breeders near you that you can volunteer on weekends or whenever you're free? Once they have gotten to know you they might be happy about showing you how its done. :)

If you want to do unhandled handling get in touch with Sarah Weston direct, I think they've done courses at horseworld and she's certainly done them in the past, I worked on a few with her at the Dartmoor Pony Training Centre in the Dartmoors brought . I think the Dartmoor Pony Training Centre will be running course again this year so if that s something you're interested in get in touch.

Not sure where you're based but if its in Devon again dptc welcome volunteers and help train handling, there may be others in whatever area you are in, maybe contact some rescue centres about volunteering?
