As many of you are aware I went out to Cairo with the Cairo Farrier team. I know that those who are following us on Facebook will be aware as to how we have got on. What a week.... I am not quite sure where to start! An experience that I will keep for me for the rest of my life is a start. It was such an array of emotions. From laughter, tears, anger, frustration - I am sure there must be more but I cannot think of any adjectives to describe them. I will post some photo's for you - please can someone tell me how I can post them from Facebook as I am a bit of a techno phobe as most know!

I really want to share what I have experienced and I can honestly say that we have made an in-road which is fabulous. The country is fascinating, I am dreading going to work on Monday as it seems such a waste of (not being modest) but talents which I have which are being wasted. I treated so many different injuries and on donkey's, camels and horses.

The farriers have made inroads with the local farrier who had never seen a pair of hoof nippers before. If he had of wanted to pull the toes back with his rasp (as sharp as your car bonnet) it would have taken him weeks. By the end of the week he was adopting Western methods of farriery and was pulling the toes back and shoeing with some width and length. It was wonderful to see. I think the breakthrough point was when we had two very very laminitic horse who were presented to the team. They were struggling to walk and were still being worked. These two horse both walked away sound (in a straight line) having been shod and it brought tears to all of our eyes. Fabulous.

I would like to thank every single person on HHO for their support and very generous donations.

Right click on the photo.

Click 'properties'.

Copy 'address (URL)' code.

Then in the reply box on HHO, click on the square, yellow photo button (square sun over a mountain... or possibly a pyramid ;) ).

Paste the adrerss (URL) code into the box.

Click OK.

:)

Been following everything you guys have been doing over there and just wanted to say, well done and keep up the great work.

I tried with one of the photos from the Wall. Does this show?

ETA. I can see it. It's photo 4/34 so if you want me to try posting another (or a few) let me know the number and I'll give it a go. :)

You have the gift!!! Please can you post a handful from our page - I cannot work out why it will not work for me.... I do know that sometimes on here, I cannot view photo's and they come up as a red square in a box and I've mentioned something to the OP and everyone else can see them fine!!! I will have a scoot through the CF photos - I was trying to post from my FB page! Thank You!!!!!

http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150626971797617.376858.630767616&type=1 there should be a heap of photo's on here which can be posted - two very sick horses that day but some good ones of Kris using the Polymer in the sole of the foot to spread the load for the laminitic horses.

Oh pooey - it wont let me look at your FB. Maybe you need to set your photo setting to public? Can a FB expert help please?

Pretty please! :D

Thank you!!! The 3rd photo down is a little horse I fell in love with - I called her Betty having called her Boris to start with and then realised she was a filly! Most of the horses worked are colts. She is horribly laminitic in front and if she isn't treated correctly her pedal bone will rotate and it's very close to her sole. She is also in the 4th from the bottom photo. We had a HUGE problem getting Western shoes out there. There is a photo on the CF page of the shoes that they use in Egypt. In the 4th photo (from the bottom) she is being shod and this was on the following day. We had to send poor Roland on a 7hour roadtrip to find shoes. You wouldn't believe that they are 3x more expensive than what we pay for them in the UK. God - I have so much to tell you all.... Supper first :) Oh the photo of us sitting down with the Pyramids as a backdrop was after a seriously hard day of graft. Poor Kris was shoeing from dawn until dusk and as you all know it's back breaking work.

Been following and sharing and SO full of admiration for what all of you have been doing out there - and getting all emotional at the reports from Kris particularly :o I do hope you continue to get loads of support and the long term plans for Cairo Farrier come to fruition :) I was going to offer you OH but at his age I think he'd keel over having a non-stop week bent over shoeing horses in high temperatures :D

I am surrounded by red fleece and velcro but haven't got too far with any actual noseband covers completed :( but I will get them done next week. Is there an address yet? Haven't had a message about it.

Just another quick add - as you can see from the photo's the general body condition of these horses has improved 10 fold. I was genuinely amazed and I would say that 90% of the horses didn't look too bad at all. In fact I even saw some fat horses - that is another story for another day. I feel like I could now write a book :)

RR - So sorry as I am sure you emailed me before I went out but I am struggling with HHO names and real names... Thank you so much re the nosebands - fantastic. I haven't had the address but I know that W has who set Cairo Farrier with me. I have just responded to someone on FB who was making nosebands with their sister asking them to email us at the CF email so we can give the address details. Was that you?! Please excuse my rubbish attempt at putting people to names and then to HHO names. EEKKK To be honest if your OH wanted to go out and do more training rather than shoeing etc that would be fantastic. We are almost starting talks for the net trip and have learnt so so much from this tester for a week. I am not sure if amongst the photo's I've given FC to post that there are some good before and after photo's of the feet. My NBF who came out and photographed for us has over 1000 photo's on her chips. She is going to memory stick them all to me which I cannot wait and I will try and post a photo diary from whilst I was there. I also want to make a PP presentation so I can give talks on what we have been doing :) so much to do!! But I am loving every minute and meeting some incredible people and equines (and camels) on the way!!

i have a few old saddles, and some old bits which i wont use again, not in great condition but better than they use out there!!! and a couple of old bridles. any use to yo to send out? pm if you want them otherwise they will go in the skip!!

Really admire the work you've done. I sent a couple of bits and a bridle to you - now getting ready to stitch nosebands with some of the liveries at my yard, but will need an address. :)

Maybe you could write a book about it all. Maybe you should write it all down anyway. Just bullet points and a bit of detail whilst it is all so fresh in your mind..just in case you want to do something with it at a later date.
I can't believe the difference made to some of their feet.

This young boy was very helpful, helping to water the horses all day, and also learning the basics of wound care

This one for me had a ray of future hope about it... The youngsters getting involved, being educated and hopefully understanding that they can make a difference...

:)

The little lad above was amazing - he and his friend were superb. Due to how manic it got with handing things out we had to take him and his pal off for a Pepsi and we gave them a halter, body brush, hoof pick, fly veil and Egypt£20 each and you should have seen their faces. I agree this is what it was all about - educating them for the future. MonK - thank you - I am going to get the address for the nosebands today and will Message you with it later on. OCUC re the offer of saddles - that is very kind and yes we would be thrilled to take them over there. They can come to my house where I now seem to have a bit of a collection! We have made some great contacts with a company who imports good quality tack etc from around the world so we are hoping that we can get stuff on board with their shipments. It's nearly impossible to mail stuff as customs seize it and then it's sold or goes in their pockets. I think this is common practise in many poorer countries. I have kept a bullet pointed diary throughout the trip so will be putting it all together once things quieten down. I am also going to ask Roland for his diary as he writes so well. Mine is more pointed and his is full or adjectives etc - which makes for a better read! Once I have mine written up you will have a greater insight into exactly how it was. A very hard week with so many emotions - I just wish I was still there with the Kiwi Care Team :) The farriers landed at about 2300 last night so will be exhausted today. Hugest thanks again to everyone. Also does anyone know if any of the HHO winners of the lessons of a lifetime have taken a lesson yet?
